Job Summary

As a Chamber Security Staff member with the House Sergeant at Arms, you will serve as the first point of contact for entry onto the House Floor. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure controlled access to the House Floor by permitting only those allowed access under the House rules.

Key Responsibilities
  • Access Control: Control entrance to the House Floor and Speaker's Lobby by identifying Members and checking credentials of other authorized personnel.
  • Facilitation: Facilitate requests for Members from the Floor for staff and the press.
  • Document Handling: Bring authenticated bills and other official documents into the Chamber.
  • Security Protocols: Assist with the coordination of security and emergency protocols, including relaying emergency communications to Members and Floor staff.
  • Access Management: Provide access control for Member meetings and briefings.
  • Customer Service: Answer questions, assist with training new employees, and model good behavior.
  • Support: Support House recovery operations structure.
  • Other Duties: Perform other official duties as assigned.
Requirements

The incumbent must be at least 21 years old with a Bachelor's degree or must have two or more years of experience relevant to the position. Previous Legislative Branch experience is preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Training and Certification: Ability to complete and pass approved training courses required by the Office of the Sergeant at Arms.
  • Recognition: Ability to recognize Members of Congress and appropriate leadership staff.
  • Interpersonal Skills: Must be tactful and courteous in dealing with Members, staff, and the general public.
  • Physical Demands: Must be physically able to stand for long periods of time.
  • Work Environment: Must be able to work well under pressure and display good judgement.
  • Communication Skills: Must have refined people and communication skills and the ability to develop strong working relationships with senior level staff, officials, and Members of Congress.
  • Work Schedule: Must be able to work long hours with varying start and finish times, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary and occasional training and Congressional events.
