The Financial Aid Department is on the lookout for a skilled professional to take on the role of Financial Aid Advisor.

West Valley College is situated in a picturesque environment, offering a serene atmosphere on 175 acres of lush greenery. Our dedicated staff and faculty are among the most qualified in the state, and our students value the college for its welcoming and supportive environment.

This role is essential for executing various technical tasks associated with financial aid, institutional scholarships, and related initiatives; evaluating and preparing comprehensive financial aid packages; and ensuring timely updates to relevant software systems.

Work Commitment:

This is a full-time position, requiring 37.5 hours per week, with a commitment of 12 months per year. The schedule may include evening or weekend hours as necessary. This position is part of the West Valley-Mission Classified Employees Association.

Compensation and Benefits:

Expected Salary Range:

  • $6,412.75-$6,980.67 monthly.

Qualifications:

Any combination of experience and education that provides the necessary knowledge and abilities is acceptable. A typical pathway to meeting these qualifications includes:

  • Experience: Two years of relevant financial aid experience.
  • Education: An Associate's degree from an accredited institution with coursework in accounting, business, or a related field.

AND

Demonstrated understanding and sensitivity to the diverse academic and cultural backgrounds of community college students.Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will also possess:

  • Experience working with underrepresented populations.
  • Knowledge of Title IV regulations and experience in determining eligibility criteria and fund disbursement.
  • A strong student-centered and customer service approach.
Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of:

  • Eligibility requirements for various State and federal programs.
  • Needs analysis and packaging methodologies.
  • Socioeconomic dynamics affecting low-income and historically disadvantaged groups.
  • Common personal and financial challenges faced by college students.
  • Public benefits and entitlement programs.
  • Academic and vocational offerings at community colleges.
  • District policies and relevant regulations.
  • Resources available to students within the college and community.
  • Interviewing and advising techniques.
  • Operation of microcomputer equipment and various software applications.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills, including patience and diplomacy.
  • Modern office practices and record-keeping techniques.

Ability to:
  • Interpret financial statements and related documents.
  • Guide students and families through financial aid application processes.
  • Analyze documentation to determine eligibility for various financial assistance programs.
  • Conduct needs analysis and award packaging.
  • Monitor student academic progress for compliance.
  • Perform financial calculations and reconcile data.
  • Plan and coordinate program activities.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Establish effective working relationships.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Prioritize tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Advocate for program participants' needs.
  • Train and direct student assistants.
  • Operate office equipment and software effectively.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Advising students and families on financial aid eligibility and requirements.
  • Evaluating financial need based on federal and state guidelines.
  • Providing technical expertise on financial aid and scholarships.
  • Verifying eligibility for financial aid programs.
  • Utilizing software for data processing and reporting.
  • Monitoring and resolving issues related to financial aid systems.
  • Ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Participating in professional development activities.
  • Building positive relationships with colleagues and the community.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
