The Financial Aid Department is in search of a dedicated professional to assume the role of Financial Aid Advisor.

West Valley College is situated in a serene, park-like environment, providing an ideal backdrop for both staff and students. Our institution is recognized for its exceptional faculty and welcoming atmosphere, fostering a supportive educational experience.

The primary objective of this role is to execute a range of technical tasks associated with financial aid, institutional scholarships, and related initiatives; to assess and develop comprehensive financial aid packages; and to oversee updates to relevant software systems.

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position, requiring 37.5 hours per week, with an annual commitment. Flexibility for evening or weekend hours may be necessary. This role is part of the West Valley-Mission Classified Employees Association.

Compensation and Benefits:

Expected Salary Range:

  • $6,412.75-$6,980.67 monthly.

Qualifications:

Applicants must possess a combination of experience and education that demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skills. A typical pathway includes:

  • Experience: A minimum of two years in a financial aid role.
  • Education: An Associate's degree in accounting, business, general education, or a related field.

AND

A demonstrated understanding of the diverse academic and cultural backgrounds of community college students.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate will also showcase:

  • Experience working with underrepresented populations.
  • Knowledge of Title IV regulations and experience in fund management.
  • A strong commitment to student-centered service.
Knowledge and Skills:

Knowledge of:

  • Eligibility criteria for various state and federal financial aid programs.
  • Needs analysis and award packaging methodologies.
  • Socioeconomic challenges faced by low-income and historically disadvantaged groups.
  • Common financial and personal challenges encountered by students.
  • Public assistance programs.
  • Community college academic and vocational offerings.
  • District policies and relevant regulations.
  • Resources available to students.
  • Effective interviewing and advisement techniques.
  • Microcomputer operations and software applications.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Interpersonal skills, including patience and diplomacy.
  • Modern office practices and record-keeping techniques.

Ability to:
  • Interpret financial documents and advise students and families on financial aid processes.
  • Analyze documentation to determine eligibility for various financial assistance programs.
  • Perform needs analysis and package awards according to eligibility requirements.
  • Monitor student academic progress for compliance.
  • Organize and implement program activities effectively.
  • Work independently and collaboratively.
  • Maintain accurate records and reports.
  • Communicate effectively in both written and verbal formats.
  • Advocate for the needs of program participants.
  • Train and supervise student assistants.
  • Utilize office equipment and software proficiently.
  • Maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.
Key Responsibilities:

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Advising students and families on financial aid eligibility and requirements.
  • Evaluating financial need based on federal and state guidelines.
  • Providing technical guidance on financial aid processes to stakeholders.
  • Ensuring compliance with eligibility requirements and performing reconciliations.
  • Utilizing software for data processing and reporting.
  • Collaborating with instructional staff to communicate program updates.
  • Maintaining a calendar of financial aid events and deadlines.
  • Ensuring adherence to record retention regulations.
  • Participating in professional development opportunities.
  • Supporting outreach efforts as needed.
  • Preparing timely reports and conducting program reconciliations.
  • Building positive relationships with colleagues and the community.
  • Embracing diversity and fostering a respectful environment.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.
