POSITION OVERVIEW

The Director of Sales and Marketing is essential in propelling the success of the University of Tennessee Press's publishing initiatives.

This role involves strategizing, executing, and overseeing comprehensive sales and marketing operations for a catalog of 35–40 new titles annually, alongside a robust backlist exceeding 1,000 titles.

The ideal candidate is a proactive and seasoned professional capable of collaborating with diverse teams, authors, and partners to elevate the visibility of UT Press's publications and enhance its market presence.

This position reports directly to the Press Director.

Since its inception in 1940, the University of Tennessee Press has been dedicated to reinforcing the University’s status as a premier research institution by publishing exceptional scholarly works and engaging titles for general audiences.

The Press covers a wide array of disciplines, including anthropology, American history—particularly focusing on the nineteenth century, the American Civil War, and African American studies—Appalachian studies, sports and popular culture, and material culture.

The Press is affiliated with the Association of University Presses.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Enhance brand visibility and drive sales within library and educational sectors, independent bookstores, major retailers, distributors, consumers, and specialty markets.

Develop and implement strategic marketing plans, encompassing marketing, advertising, exhibition, and promotional strategies for individual titles and the overall Press catalog.

Design and execute integrated print and digital marketing campaigns, working closely with authors, the Press Director, and the Publicity & Promotions Coordinator.

Formulate a comprehensive conference strategy to maximize sales and acquisition opportunities.

Oversee the overall media strategy and the creation of promotional materials.

Generate branded content, including podcasts, newsletters, blogs, shareable graphics, downloadable resources, and video trailers.

Establish a digital strategy that encompasses website management, social media engagement, email marketing, SEO, PPC, and influencer collaborations.

Ensure cohesive marketing efforts in alignment with the initiatives of UT Libraries.

Manage publicity efforts and assist with events and conferences.

Set ambitious sales targets that foster growth and success.

Utilize historical data analysis, market trends, and industry forecasts to predict future sales performance.

Present seasonal catalogs to commissioned sales representatives, emphasizing key titles for their respective regions and advocating for Tennessee's list as a priority.

Coordinate booth logistics and sales at conferences, ensuring an engaging setup and effective staffing.

Represent the Press for key accounts.

Identify and engage potential customers through targeted marketing initiatives and strategic partnerships.

Analyze market data and trends to uncover opportunities and challenges.

Supervise the publicity and promotions coordinator and commissioned sales representatives.

Foster relationships with authors, actively listening to understand their target markets and leveraging their networks for effective marketing campaigns.

Lead strategic sales and marketing initiatives.

Collaborate with leadership on strategic vision, objectives, and budget management.

Engage in professional development, committing to 3 hours per month.


ADMINISTRATIVE/OPERATIONS:

Develop and manage the marketing budget.

Evaluate marketing ROI to refine and enhance the marketing program, sharing insights and results with stakeholders.

Prepare performance reports on marketing activities for library administration.

Assist in the acquisitions process by assessing and reporting on the marketability of potential projects.



QUALIFICATIONS
Required

Bachelor's Degree in English, Marketing, or a related field.

Demonstrated experience in marketing academic, trade, and/or textbooks within the publishing sector or a related field, with a solid understanding of the publishing landscape.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Comprehensive knowledge of marketing principles, trends, and best practices.

Proficiency in digital marketing channels, including social media, SEO, email marketing, and content management systems.

Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to craft compelling marketing content.

Analytical mindset with the capability to interpret data and derive actionable insights.

Strong leadership and team management skills.

Creative thinker with a passion for innovation and a commitment to staying current with industry trends.


Preferred

Master's Degree.

Experience in book marketing or agency settings.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Awareness of trends and current issues in academic publishing, including electronic publishing, print-on-demand, and Open Access.
