Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States GC Therapeutics Full time

Position: Scientist / Senior Scientist – Computational Biology

Company Overview

GC Therapeutics is a pioneering company focused on genome-wide cell landscape exploration, utilizing an integrated synthetic biology and AI-driven platform for cell programming. Our proprietary technology platform, TFomeTM, developed in the lab of Professor George Church, a leader in synthetic biology, enables the creation of innovative cell therapies with enhanced manufacturing processes, improved cell quality, and increased efficiency. GC Therapeutics is headquartered in Cambridge, MA.

Job Purpose

We are seeking a skilled and driven Scientist/Senior Scientist to join our Genomics team. The ideal candidate will possess substantial expertise in analyzing and interpreting genomic assays pertinent to research and product development. Responsibilities include assessing the safety and efficacy of our cell products through genomic assays such as whole-genome sequencing and cancer panels. This role demands innovative problem-solving skills throughout the sequencing process, variant identification, release criteria establishment, and safety profile development. Experience in analyzing (single-cell) transcriptomic data is advantageous but not mandatory. Reporting to the Genomics team lead, this individual will leverage these assays to create novel cell therapies derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) for regenerative and cell-based treatments.

Duties and Responsibilities

General Scientific Responsibilities:

  • Maintain comprehensive laboratory records, organize databases, summarize findings, and prepare presentations for internal meetings.
  • Demonstrate scientific curiosity and deep knowledge of relevant literature and advanced technologies to drive research initiatives.
  • Provide scientific and technical guidance to junior staff or contract research organizations (CRO) for specific projects.
  • Collaborate with other research team members and within GC Therapeutics to achieve organizational objectives.
  • Adhere to all laboratory safety protocols and company policies.

Computational Biology Responsibilities:

  • Advise on the design and execution of experimental workflows for sequencing data acquisition.
  • Establish and enhance next-generation sequencing data analysis workflows and statistical methods for genome sequencing experiments.
  • Conduct computational analyses and extract insights from large, complex genome-scale datasets.
  • Generate insights from extensive datasets to inform cell programming experiments.
  • Define and refine release criteria to ensure the genomic safety of cell products.
  • Support research teams by delivering bioinformatics analyses as required.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in computational biology, bioinformatics, systems biology, statistics, physics, biostatistics, or a related field with 5+ years of relevant experience in academia or industry.
  • Proven computational experience with whole-genome and targeted genome sequencing (e.g., cancer panels) of mammalian cells.
  • Experience with safety and release considerations for cell therapy products, including the preparation of SOPs and documentation for clinical/regulatory submissions.
  • Strong knowledge of applied statistics and machine learning, with the ability to derive insights and formulate biologically relevant hypotheses.
  • Proficiency in Python and Unix/bash, along with expertise in high-throughput sequencing data analysis and integration.
  • Experience in designing and interpreting mammalian cell culture or in vivo experiments, particularly in cell therapy product optimization and process development.
  • Strong work ethic with the capability to perform tasks independently and effectively lead junior staff.
  • Proficient in analyzing, presenting, and documenting scientific data, as well as preparing scientific reports.
  • Excellent communication skills with strong interpersonal abilities.
  • Demonstrated project management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize and multitask.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in computational analysis of (single-cell) transcriptomic datasets.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based computing solutions.
  • Experience in managing and maintaining genome-scale databases.
  • Experience with genome editing of pluripotent stem cells (e.g., hiPSCs).
  • A proven track record of strong publications in computational biology or stem cell biology.
  • Experience in designing and interpreting mammalian cell culture or in vivo experiments, particularly in cell therapy product optimization and process development.
