The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a dedicated professional to fill the role of Laboratory and Facilities Operations Technician. This position is essential for supporting undergraduate projects and ensuring the efficient functioning of facilities within the Mechanical and Aerospace (MAE) Department.

The successful candidate will possess a background in assembling and calibrating electronic devices, familiarity with safety and environmental standards, and a capacity to learn technical software applications. A collaborative spirit is essential, as well as strong communication skills to engage effectively with a diverse group of individuals.

Student Laboratory Assistance:
  • Facilitate the setup and organization of laboratory projects, ensuring the availability and proper configuration of equipment.
  • Procure necessary materials and supplies for undergraduate laboratory activities.
  • Work alongside faculty and students to create project workspaces and maintain operational efficiency.
Electronic Component Support:
  • Diagnose and maintain electronic components utilized in experiments and projects.
  • Execute soldering tasks for circuit boards and small electronic parts.
  • Assist students with circuit assembly, testing, and troubleshooting, employing tools such as digital multimeters and oscilloscopes.
Software Calibration and Configuration:
  • Calibrate measurement instruments and sensors to ensure accurate data collection.
  • Provide support on commonly used software tools in mechanical engineering laboratories, including LabVIEW and SolidWorks.
Laboratory Safety and Compliance:
  • Instruct students on laboratory safety protocols and the correct handling of equipment and hazardous materials.
  • Ensure compliance with safety regulations to foster a secure working environment.
Technical Documentation:
  • Record procedures, setup instructions, and troubleshooting guidelines for laboratory experiments.
  • Develop user-friendly manuals for students to reference during their activities.
Equipment Maintenance and Repair:
  • Conduct routine maintenance on laboratory equipment such as mechanical testing machines, 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines.
  • Coordinate necessary repairs or replacements as required.
Facilities Support:

Collaboration with Facilities Management:
  • Assist faculty and research personnel in identifying facility needs for laboratory spaces and equipment, including electrical and ventilation requirements.
  • Initiate and track progress on work orders with Facilities Management.
Furniture Assembly and Arrangement:
  • Assemble furniture items such as desks, chairs, and shelves as needed.
  • Rearrange or remove furniture to meet room usage requirements or renovation plans.
Forklift Operation:
  • Operate forklifts safely for material transport, including large department deliveries.
  • Follow established protocols and safety procedures.
Material Inventory and Management:
  • Conduct an annual inventory of capital equipment acquired by the MAE Department.
  • Organize the disposal of surplus materials and equipment appropriately.
  • Manage surplus orders for furniture, equipment, and materials across the department.

Minimum Qualifications:
Education: GED/High School Diploma
Experience: Five years

Physical Requirements:
Requires prolonged periods of standing while operating machinery.
