The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking a skilled Laboratory Technician to join our dedicated team within the Department of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences. This role involves contributing to vital addiction research under the guidance of experienced professionals. The successful candidate will engage in innovative studies aimed at understanding the neurobiological underpinnings of addiction, with a focus on sex differences in addiction vulnerability.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Conduct experiments utilizing rodent models to explore addiction mechanisms.
  • Assist in achieving the laboratory's objectives while working closely with the Principal Investigator.
  • Oversee the maintenance of animal research protocols, ensuring adherence to compliance standards among all personnel.
  • Manage and train undergraduate research assistants, ensuring proper animal care and surgical procedures.
  • Document all research findings meticulously and collaborate with other lab members to support ongoing projects.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Laboratory Technician

Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field.

Experience: Minimum of 3 years in a laboratory setting; 6 years of lab-related experience may substitute for educational requirements.

Intermediate Laboratory Technician

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 6 years in a laboratory technician capacity; a Master's degree may replace some experience; 9 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Senior Laboratory Technician

Education: Bachelor's degree.

Experience: 9 years in a laboratory technician role; a Master's or Terminal degree with 4 years of relevant experience may substitute; 12 years of lab-related experience accepted in lieu of degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Experience in at least two of the following areas: addiction research, behavioral studies, neuropharmacology, surgical techniques, Western blotting/qPCR/RNA-sequencing, and bioinformatics.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This position requires the ability to stand and squat for extended periods while conducting experiments or caring for laboratory animals. Additionally, it involves keyboarding and performing intricate procedures requiring fine motor skills.
