Position Overview

The Commonwealth of Virginia is looking for a part-time Senior Laboratory Technician to contribute to the innovative research initiatives led by Dr. Patricio Ray within the Department of Pediatrics. This role is essential in advancing studies aimed at enhancing the health outcomes of children suffering from renal disorders.

Key Responsibilities
  • Research Support: Collaborate with faculty researchers and independently design research projects, develop methodologies, and prepare proposals while overseeing daily project operations.
  • Supervision: Potentially oversee research activities and provide guidance to support personnel.
  • Strategic Planning: Assist in establishing and executing both short-term and long-term objectives for laboratory operations, including forecasting future needs and formulating strategies.
  • Policy Development: May create and enforce laboratory policies and procedures, ensuring alignment with operational standards.
  • Interdepartmental Liaison: Act as a communication bridge to other departments or organizations as necessary.
  • Project Management: Design and conduct small to moderately complex research projects, coordinating data collection and validation while reviewing progress and outcomes.
  • Protocol Development: Establish protocols and criteria, oversee interview processes, and approve research methodologies.
  • Data Analysis: Analyze data and interpret research methodologies based on analytical outcomes.
  • Publication Contribution: Co-author research publications and may present findings alongside the Principal Investigator at academic meetings.
  • Training and Mentorship: Provide guidance on hiring and training technical staff, and supervise the instruction of residents, interns, and students in laboratory techniques.
  • Additional Duties: Other responsibilities may be assigned as needed.
Position Details

This is a wage position, not eligible for leave or benefits, limited to 1500 hours of work annually.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience: A minimum of 9 years in a laboratory technician role is required. A Master’s or Terminal degree may substitute for 4 years of experience, with 12 years of experience accepted in lieu of a degree.
  • Licensure: None required.
Physical Requirements

This role involves extended periods of standing and squatting while conducting experiments, as well as tasks requiring fine motor skills.
