The Commonwealth of Virginia is seeking qualified candidates for two Laboratory Research Technician positions within the Pani Lab, specializing in cellular biology and regenerative studies.
The Pani Lab is dedicated to investigating acoelomorph flatworms and C. elegans to understand the cellular processes involved in development, homeostasis, and regeneration. The selected Laboratory Research Technicians will be integral to both scientific inquiry and laboratory operations.
The ideal candidates will be self-driven individuals with a profound enthusiasm for fundamental scientific research. They should demonstrate a strong commitment to their research areas and possess prior experience in overseeing independent research initiatives, whether as undergraduate researchers or laboratory technicians. A Bachelor's degree in Biology or a related discipline is strongly preferred.
Preferred qualifications include proficiency in various methodologies such as:
- Husbandry of marine invertebrates (preferably acoelomorphs)
- C. elegans husbandry and genetic analysis
- Confocal or fluorescence microscopy techniques
- Classical developmental biology/embryology methods, along with molecular biology techniques like PCR and nucleic acid purification
Applicants should exhibit a genuine interest in developmental biology, regeneration, and/or evolutionary biology through relevant academic coursework or research experience. The responsibilities of the Laboratory Technicians will encompass:
Position 1 Responsibilities:
- Overseeing the maintenance of the breeding acoelomorph colony, including tank upkeep and feeding of both adult and juvenile specimens
- Conducting molecular biology experiments focused on development and regeneration utilizing pharmacological inhibitors or protein treatments
- Characterizing gene expression patterns through immunofluorescence and in situ hybridization techniques
- Completing additional laboratory tasks as required
Position 2 Responsibilities:
- Providing molecular biology support for the laboratory, including plasmid purification, nucleic acid isolation, and molecular cloning
- Assisting in the care of the breeding colony
- Executing experiments on cell proliferation dynamics using DNA labeling reagents and immunofluorescence
- Managing laboratory inventories and fulfilling other tasks as necessary
These positions will report to Ariel Pani, Assistant Professor of Biology. Candidates are encouraged to highlight their expertise, enthusiasm, and relevant experience in their applications.
