Overview

The City of Charlotte is a thriving metropolis with a rich history and a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion. As a Community Relations Specialist, you will play a critical role in promoting equality and fairness throughout the city.

Responsibilities
  • Administer the Nondiscrimination Ordinance Program (NDO) to ensure compliance with federal and state laws.
  • Provide specialized community relations services to individuals and groups, including training and education on anti-discrimination laws and regulations.
  • Investigate complaints of discrimination in public accommodations and employment practices, and participate in conciliation and public hearings.
  • Identify community needs and resources to meet those needs, and develop strategies to address social, economic, and community relations issues.
  • Collect, research, and analyze information relating to community problems and projects, and prepare and present reports to subcommittees and task forces.
  • Develop and maintain contact and working relationships with community groups, special interest groups, and human service agencies.
  • Prepare and maintain records and periodic reports.
Requirements
  • Major course work in social work, sociology, or a related field.
  • Knowledge of federal and state laws and procedures relating to civil/human rights.
  • Thorough knowledge of community needs and human service resources.
  • Ability to analyze, investigate, and conciliate individual or group complaints of discrimination and unfair treatment.
  • Ability to make decisions independently within general policies and guidelines.
  • Ability to organize and clearly communicate ideas and information orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze complex human service problems and to identify or develop resources to resolve those problems.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective collaborations with community groups, public and private employers, and human service agencies and organizations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in human service, community relations programs, or analyzing and investigating equal opportunity complaints.
  • Proficient bi-lingual skills.
