POSITION SUMMARY

Legal Assistance of Western New York, Inc. is actively seeking a Director of Pro Bono Affairs. This pivotal role involves leading and enhancing the organization’s Pro Bono and Volunteer Programs. The Director will be responsible for crafting a strategic vision and comprehensive plan for pro bono initiatives while ensuring adherence to Legal Services Corporation (LSC) regulations regarding private attorney involvement. Additionally, the role encompasses the management of various pro bono-related grants.

The Director will collaborate closely with the Executive Director and the Management Team to oversee a regional pro bono staff team. Responsibilities include the implementation and coordination of pro bono opportunities, volunteer recruitment, clinics, internal case referrals, and other related projects. The Director will serve as the primary liaison with national, state, regional, and local pro bono committees, task forces, and initiatives, fostering positive relationships with judges, court personnel, attorneys, bar associations, law schools, universities, and volunteers.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Licensed to practice law in New York State or eligible for admission preferred. Consideration may be given to non-attorney applicants with substantial experience in managing pro bono activities.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in the legal field.
  • Proven commitment to assisting underserved populations in overcoming barriers to legal services.
  • Strong understanding of volunteer development, recruitment, compliance, and best practices.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and written communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel within the service area.
  • Ability to represent the organization at external meetings and conferences.
  • Experience with data management and proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Suite.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director and Management Team to formulate both short-term and long-term strategic plans for pro bono that align with the organization’s mission.
  • Develop a departmental budget and staffing strategy.
  • Create policies and procedures for pro bono efforts that reflect the organization’s goals.
  • Design and execute various pro bono projects that engage private attorneys and volunteers in fulfilling the organization’s mission.
  • Ensure compliance with grant requirements associated with pro bono initiatives.
  • Supervise a multi-office team to achieve the objectives of the Pro Bono Department.
  • Conduct outreach to law firms, legal service providers, bar associations, law schools, and community non-profits to promote pro bono involvement.
  • Act as the primary contact for private attorneys and volunteers.
  • Consult with internal stakeholders on volunteer training and supervision across multiple projects.
  • Oversee volunteer recruitment, retention, and appreciation initiatives.
  • Coordinate pro bono activities across all offices.
  • Participate in national conferences and local discussions related to pro bono management.

  • Passion for social justice and commitment to the organization’s mission.
  • Fluency in a language other than English that is spoken by clients is a plus.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Compensation is based on experience, with a structured pay scale and annual increments. The starting salary for a Director of Pro Bono Affairs with five years of experience is $77,500, and for ten years of experience, it is $84,400. The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package, including significant employer-paid health insurance, dental and disability insurance, vision coverage, and life insurance. Generous leave provisions include vacation days, holidays, sick days, and parental leave.

The organization promotes a work-life balance and supports a 35-hour work week. Remote work options are available, allowing staff to work from home several days a week based on workload and manager approval.
