STARTING PAY: $14.13/hr

Under the guidance of the Visitor Services Coordinator, this role is responsible for the planning, development, execution, and assessment of all educational initiatives at the Zoo. This includes programs for schools, workshops for educators, scouting activities, special events, family-oriented programs, overnight experiences, exhibit tours, and keeper interactions. The position also involves managing educational animals, which include various reptiles, amphibians, birds, and small mammals. Additionally, the coordinator will oversee the Zoo's adult and junior volunteer programs.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Designs, organizes, and implements educational programs both on-site and off-site.
  • Supervises, schedules, and trains volunteers while managing the volunteer program.
  • Creates and assesses curricula for school programs.
  • Develops and utilizes educational graphics and displays within the Zoo.
  • Facilitates program activities such as classroom visits, Zoo tours, and educator workshops.
  • Assists in the planning and coordination of special events.
  • Creates and conducts seasonal camps, overseeing seasonal camp staff.
  • Manages the Zoo's social media platforms and prepares monthly newsletters, as well as daily and weekly posts.
  • Updates and maintains the Zoo's website.
  • Performs additional job-related tasks as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

A Bachelor's degree in education, biology, or a related discipline is required, along with two years of experience in teaching or coordinating youth programs/services, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience in a zoological environment is preferred. A valid Texas Driver's License is necessary.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in delivering engaging presentations suitable for various audiences.
  • Preferred experience working with children, either professionally or as a volunteer.
  • Knowledge of animal biology, behavior, natural history, and conservation topics.
  • Experience working directly with animals is a plus (reptiles, amphibians, birds, small mammals).
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and Outlook is essential, with experience in creating newsletters, brochures, and managing social media being advantageous.
  • Must be adaptable, self-driven, a collaborative team member, and capable of working with volunteers.
  • Availability to work weekdays, weekends, overnight shifts, and other irregular hours as needed.
  • Ability to operate various vehicles and equipment, including golf carts and two-way radios.
  • Capability to read and write effectively.
