School of Veterinary Medicine Mission:

The Texas Tech University School of Veterinary Medicine (TTU SVM) aims to address the educational and veterinary service needs of rural and regional communities while providing access to high-quality, affordable education. Located in Amarillo, Texas, the TTU SVM features modern facilities and access to a diverse range of animal populations, including domestic and production animals, which enrich opportunities for field-based research.

Core Objectives of the School:

  • Produce competent and confident veterinarians ready to serve rural and regional communities across Texas.
  • Ensure access to high-quality veterinary education for Texans.
  • Develop a research-focused institution that complements the strengths of TTU and the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center (TTUHSC).
  • Facilitate graduate education and research, along with advanced clinical training through internships and residencies.
  • Support the sustainability of livestock industries to meet the needs of growing populations.
  • Enhance human, animal, and ecosystem health through innovative One Health initiatives integrated into educational and service activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Report directly to the Dean while collaborating closely with the Institutional Veterinarian, Animal Care Services, and the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  • Oversee and support the daily treatment and care of animals owned by the TTU SVM, working with personnel to implement therapeutic plans.
  • Assist in the development of Animal Use Protocols and maintain medical records for both TTU SVM and client-owned animals.
  • Work with staff to create and uphold standard operating procedures (SOP) for animal use in education and research.
  • Act as the primary contact for monitoring controlled substances used in instructional and research activities.
  • Coordinate with the Institutional Veterinarian and ACS to ensure compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Provide training for students, veterinary technicians, and animal caretakers regarding animal care.

Additional Duties:

  • Contribute to accreditation activities with the American Veterinary Medical Association Council on Education and deliver the curriculum to students.
  • Participate in committees such as the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee and the TTU SVM Veterinary Clinical Studies Committee.
  • Depending on the candidate's interests, engage in teaching, research, and community service activities.

Compensation:

A competitive salary and benefits package will be offered, commensurate with qualifications and experience. This is a full-time, 12-month academic appointment, with opportunities for supplemental income through external employment.

Qualifications:

  • A Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent is required, along with experience in veterinary medicine.
  • Licensure or eligibility for licensure in Texas is mandatory.

In alignment with TTU's strategic goals, applicants should demonstrate experience working with diverse student populations.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Proven experience in veterinary clinical practice.
  • Strong collaborative skills.
  • Familiarity with regulations governing animal use in education and research, though training will be provided if necessary.
  • Specialization in a relevant area of veterinary medicine, evidenced by advanced training or certification.
