Position Overview

The Lead Power Systems Engineer is responsible for the comprehensive oversight of project initiation, design, and specifications. This includes conducting reliability assessments and economic evaluations of new loads, integrating best practices for resource incorporation, and pinpointing areas within the Seminole system that necessitate upgrades or modifications to accommodate future load demands. Furthermore, the Lead Engineer manages the assessment of new generation and transmission facilities in accordance with regulatory interconnection guidelines, spearheads the creation and execution of documentation for transmission planning compliance with industry reliability standards, and evaluates generation and transmission alternatives to effectively serve Seminole Member load.

Key Responsibilities
  • Acts as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) concerning assigned reliability standards relevant to the Planning Authority and Transmission Planner functions.
  • Reviews and endorses designs proposed by staff and consultants.
  • Investigates all system disturbances affecting Seminole and member delivery points to determine causes and necessary remedial actions.
  • Represents Seminole in relevant technical committees associated with transmission planning.
  • Stays informed about emerging technologies and advancements, and engages with external organizations such as IEEE or NERC standard drafting teams.
  • Mentors junior staff members.
  • Performs additional duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications and Educational Background

A Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution is mandatory. An advanced degree in engineering is preferred. A minimum of eight (8) years of progressively responsible experience in the electric power utility sector, specifically in system planning and related compliance with reliability standards, is required. Professional engineering registration in Florida or an advanced degree may substitute for one (1) year of experience.

Technical Skills:
  • Proficiency in load flow, short circuit, and stability simulation software, preferably Siemens PSS/E, TARA, TSAT, VSAT.
  • Knowledge of NERC TPL, MOD, FAC, PRC, IRO, and CIP Reliability Standards.
  • Ability to develop scripts for process automation.
  • Experience with Electromagnetic Transient simulations (EMT) using PSCAD.
  • Competence in economic evaluations.
  • Ability to create drawings and diagrams.
  • Familiarity with transmission design and instructional manuals.
  • Experience in Generator Interconnection Studies.
  • Contract management skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

Physical Requirements

Must adhere to established safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). A valid driver's license and a satisfactory Motor Vehicle Report are required.

Working Environment

Some travel, overnight stays, and work outside of standard business hours may be necessary for visits to existing and future transmission facilities, substations, and generator sites. Exposure to typical industrial hazards may occur while working in certain areas of substations and switchyards.
