Automation Engineer for Manufacturing Systems

Position Overview
The Automation Engineer for Manufacturing Systems will be responsible for the design and implementation of automated solutions tailored for high-performance thermoplastics. This role includes overseeing equipment projects and integrating advanced technologies to optimize manufacturing operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and engineer automated manufacturing systems specifically for thin, high-performance thermoplastics.
- Lead innovative research and development initiatives in automation technologies.
- Oversee capital equipment projects, encompassing justification, selection, requisition, and deployment.
- Incorporate technology and bespoke automation into existing or new processes to improve safety, quality, efficiency, and production rates.
- Assemble, test, and troubleshoot automated manufacturing systems and equipment.
- Engage effectively with both internal and external stakeholders to address technical requirements and ensure project continuity.
- Collaborate with a diverse team throughout the product lifecycle, from research and development to production support.
- Assist in product qualification processes and facilitate transitions to high-volume manufacturing.
- Generate and maintain comprehensive technical documentation, including schematics, bills of materials, specifications, and operational instructions.
- Design and execute experiments to address design challenges and resolve complex system issues.
- Provide mentorship and training to junior engineers and technicians, while performing additional assigned tasks as necessary.
Candidate Profile
The ideal candidate will possess:
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology.
- A background in Robotics or Mechanical Engineering is preferred, though other engineering disciplines will be considered.
- A minimum of 5 years of relevant engineering experience.
- Experience in manufacturing automation and familiarity with materials and equipment used in plastic part fabrication.
- An understanding of machine design, basic electrical design, and standard manufacturing practices.
- Knowledge of plastic part fabrication techniques, including forming and sealing methods; experience with thermoforming is advantageous.
- Proficiency in engineering systems, analytical methods, and business tools.
- Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, along with the ability to learn new software.
- Expertise in SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software.
- The capability to specify automation hardware and software.
- A working knowledge of control system design, PLC and HMI programming, and robotics.
- An understanding of drawing standards, including geometric tolerancing.
