Position: Architect IV - Competitive Salary


Under the guidance of the Director, this role encompasses advanced architectural responsibilities, focusing on the planning, design, and execution of architectural and construction initiatives.

This position offers consultative expertise and leadership by guiding specialized professionals. You will oversee extensive inspections and address concerns within long-term care construction projects. Conducting annual and initial surveys is essential to ensure adherence to state licensure and federal certification standards. You will identify deficiencies in compliance with program requirements and make necessary referrals to appropriate agencies. Your ability to interpret codes, regulations, and guidelines will be crucial as you prepare guidance documentation. You will also review federal survey reports, train inspection personnel, and coordinate travel logistics. This role allows for considerable independence and initiative in decision-making.

Key Responsibilities:
Deliver high-level technical architectural support.

Plan and coordinate the design and construction of long-term care facilities, ensuring compliance with all relevant codes and requirements.

Provide interpretation of codes and policies to design professionals, facility directors, and the public.

Develop guidance materials to train staff and educate the public, thereby minimizing failed inspections and enhancing consistency among inspectors.

Act as a resource for architectural and engineering issues related to long-term care facilities.


Conduct field inspections and investigate complaints regarding complex long-term care facilities, evaluating data to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project specifications.

Lead teams in testing essential life-safety systems (such as medical gas, emergency electrical systems, nurse call systems, HVAC, emergency water supply, fire alarm systems, and sprinkler systems).

Utilize professional judgment and expertise in fire safety design when assessing long-term care facilities.

Collaborate with contractors, construction managers, and other regulatory officials. Coordinate inspection travel arrangements.

Facilitate meetings with representatives from long-term care facilities (including architects, engineers, contractors, and providers). Assess functional and spatial needs for new constructions or renovations. Provide public presentations and training on various design aspects and agency procedures. Prepare educational resources and training documentation. Mentor newly hired architects and engineers during their orientation and initial training.

Engage in the development and revision of rules related to architectural and engineering standards for long-term care facilities. Attend enforcement conferences and hearings to provide expert testimony regarding architectural and engineering compliance.

Prepare state and federal reports, distilling information into specific findings and proposing solutions. Review architectural drawings, blueprints, technical reports, and specifications for compliance with regulations.


Perform additional duties as assigned to ensure efficient daily operations and management objectives, including assisting in the formulation and implementation of departmental policies and procedures.

Represent the agency with expert testimony in legal proceedings involving actions taken against facilities on behalf of residents.

Actively participate in disaster response and recovery efforts or Continuity of Operations (COOP) activation, which may require alternate shift assignments or locations.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Familiarity with architectural and design principles, construction methodologies, and engineering specifications relevant to design work; strong mathematical skills.


Knowledge of the long-term care sector and life safety applications, including Long-Term Care safety codes.

Proficiency in conducting long-term care inspections and understanding contract construction administration principles.

Knowledge of fire safety principles, prevention practices, hazards, and disaster preparedness.

Skills in effective communication with the public, stakeholders, and other state agencies.

Competence in composing, editing, and proofreading professional correspondence and reports. Technical writing skills for creating clear reports and business documents.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant software applications.

Ability to establish and maintain positive professional relationships with colleagues and the public.


Skills in project management and decision-making that impacts service delivery.

Proficiency in using architectural tools and problem-solving techniques.

Ability to document information through correspondence.

Ability to communicate effectively with facility personnel to gather necessary survey information.

Ability to conduct interviews, document findings, and prepare detailed reports using word processing software.

Ability to learn and integrate complex concepts related to long-term care Life Safety Code regulations.

Ability to visualize architectural designs and apply architectural principles.

Ability to apply logical reasoning to identify complex problems, gather data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Ability to manage a substantial workload and prioritize multiple assignments with minimal supervision, exercising independent judgment.
