In this role, the selected candidate will be responsible for establishing, promoting, and sustaining safety, health support, and loss prevention within the Department of Public Works. This position collaborates closely with the City’s Risk Management and Occupational Safety and Health team to ensure the consistent implementation of city-wide policies, programs, and procedures.

As a key partner in Occupational Safety and Health, you will participate in cross-departmental meetings and contribute to collaborative efforts that strengthen relationships with the City’s Risk Management team. Your responsibilities will include providing technical support, conducting investigations into occupational injuries and vehicle accidents, delivering safety and health training, performing field inspections, identifying safety/security concerns, reporting job-related injuries, and ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. Additionally, you will be expected to provide feedback on City policies and procedures, recommend improvements, inspect work sites and facilities, create and manage work orders to address identified issues, conduct indoor air quality assessments, and lead departmental safety committee meetings.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead safety, health, and environmental initiatives across the department.
  • Conduct training sessions, investigations of accidents, and field inspections at various City facilities and construction sites, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards.
  • Manage the City’s safety programs by tracking job-related injuries, conducting accident investigations, overseeing safety training, and maintaining accurate records.
  • Develop and implement safety training schedules and support divisions in maintaining training records.
  • Research and provide technical support on safety and health policies and standards.
  • Collaborate with management to develop safety performance measures and provide statistical reports.
  • Create an annual safety training calendar and provide regular updates on program execution.
  • Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual statistics for departmental reporting.
Minimum Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in business, public administration, or a related field.
  • Two years of professional experience in a relevant area.
  • A valid unrestricted North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
Preferred Skills
  • In-depth knowledge of federal and state workplace insurance regulations and OSHA standards.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present policies and training to diverse audiences.
  • Proven ability to develop and implement safety goals, policies, and procedures.
  • Proficiency in standard office and computer applications.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Experience with safety certifications and awards is highly desirable.
