In this role, the selected candidate will be responsible for establishing, promoting, and maintaining safety, health support, and loss prevention initiatives within the Department of Public Works. This position collaborates closely with the City's Risk Management and Occupational Safety and Health team to ensure the consistent application of city-wide policies, programs, and procedures.
As a key partner in Occupational Safety and Health, you will participate in cross-departmental meetings and support collaborative efforts to strengthen relationships with the City's Risk Management team. Your responsibilities will include providing technical support, conducting investigations into occupational injuries and vehicle accidents, delivering safety and health training, performing field inspections, identifying safety and security concerns, reporting on job-related injuries, and ensuring compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local regulations. You will also be tasked with reviewing City policies and procedures, making recommendations, inspecting work sites and facilities, creating and following up on work orders to address identified issues, conducting indoor air quality assessments, and leading departmental safety committee meetings.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead safety, health, and environmental initiatives across the department.
- Conduct training sessions, investigate accidents, and perform inspections at various facilities and construction sites to ensure compliance with OSHA regulations.
- Manage the City's safety programs by tracking job injuries, conducting accident investigations, overseeing safety training, and maintaining records.
- Develop and implement safety training schedules and maintain training records.
- Research and provide technical support on safety and health issues, including emergency preparedness.
- Communicate with senior management regarding safety performance measures and statistics.
- Create an annual safety training calendar and provide updates on program execution.
- Generate monthly, quarterly, and annual safety statistics for reporting purposes.
- Bachelor's degree in business, public administration, or a related field.
- Two years of relevant professional experience.
- A valid unrestricted North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record.
- In-depth knowledge of federal and state workplace insurance regulations and OSHA standards.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to present policies and training effectively.
- Experience in developing and implementing safety goals, policies, and procedures.
- Proficiency in standard office and computer applications.
- Ability to create and maintain various documentation, including spreadsheets and presentations.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks effectively.
- Professional certifications such as Certified Safety Professional or First Aid/CPR are highly preferred.
- Experience in the Public Works industry is a plus.
