Position Summary:
The Chief Engineer for Optical Space Payloads will oversee a dynamic team of engineers with varying expertise and backgrounds, ensuring the successful technical and performance execution of engineering projects. This role presents a unique opportunity to contribute to the advancement of Earth Observation/Infrared (EO/IR) space payloads and laser technologies.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead architectural evaluations to identify balanced technical, scheduling, and cost-effective solutions for clients.
  • Provide mentorship to technical teams, including hardware/software designers and analysts, throughout the entire product lifecycle.
  • Enhance processes and promote best practices across the program to mitigate execution risks while optimizing delivery timelines and costs.
  • Customize GA’s standard processes, methodologies, tools, and metrics to meet specific program requirements.
  • Act as the primary technical liaison for engineering with clients, systems integrators, program management, and Integrated Product Teams (IPTs).
  • Oversee and coordinate engineering resources to assess and resolve technical challenges, including engaging external experts as necessary.
  • Maintain control of the technical baseline by implementing Engineering Review Board (ERB) protocols and supporting the Risk and Opportunity Management Process (ROMP).
  • Manage the professional and technical performance of team members to ensure quality and achievement of business and financial goals.
  • Support and guide engineering staff in analyzing, investigating, and resolving standard engineering challenges.
  • Conduct independent, complex engineering tasks, document findings, communicate results, deliver technical presentations, and support testing activities both on-site and remotely.
  • Lead the design, development, and testing of components and systems.
  • Exhibit a comprehensive understanding of design, analysis, fabrication, and testing techniques for space and military applications.
  • Assist in requirement analysis, mission analysis, and design trade-offs.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned or required.
Qualifications:
  • A bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD in engineering or a related technical field from an accredited institution, along with progressive engineering experience: fifteen or more years with a bachelor's, thirteen or more years with a master's, or ten or more years with a PhD. Equivalent engineering experience may substitute for formal education.
  • Knowledge of the satellite system lifecycle, including spacecraft development, environmental testing, launch, and operational phases.
  • Ability to thrive in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  • Prior experience with optical systems is preferred.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, presentation, and interpersonal skills are essential for effective collaboration across departments and with various stakeholders.
  • Experience in Systems Architecture design for spacecraft, payload, and ground systems during proposal efforts.
  • Familiarity with all stages of the program lifecycle, from pre-proposal to on-orbit checkout.
  • Demonstrated strategic development and analytical skills.
  • Experience in innovative approaches to meet customer needs in a research and development context.
  • Proven ability to mentor and develop technical talent.
  • Strong capability to drive resolution of complex technical challenges.
  • Experience with the development, assembly/integration/testing, readiness, and operation of space systems.
  • Experience in procurement and management of supplier-developed or Government-Furnished Equipment (GFE) hardware/software, including collaboration with subcontract management and procurement teams.
  • Demonstrated conceptual thinking skills with the ability to translate ideas into actionable results.
  • Ability to foster consensus among peers while building strong relationships with team members, leadership, and clients.
  • Capability to obtain and maintain a TS/SCI security clearance.
Salary: $128,130 - $229,358
