San Diego, California, United States ASML Germany GmbH Full time

Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Optical Engineer to contribute to our DUV Excimer Laser division. This role focuses on the specification, design, development, and testing of optical modules integral to our advanced laser systems. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with mechanical, hardware, and software engineering teams to facilitate the comprehensive development of laser technologies. This position may also involve acting as the primary technical liaison for outsourced optical design initiatives, which includes tasks such as specifying, selecting, and qualifying both active and passive optical components, as well as developing and benchmarking optical system performance models.

Key Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of engineering tasks related to DUV Excimer laser subsystem/module/component design from initial concept through to manufacturing transition.
  • Engage in development activities following the ASML Product Generation Process, which encompasses requirements definition, engineering reviews, risk assessments, verification testing, and comprehensive documentation.
  • Contribute to project planning, including establishing key deliverables, timelines, and budgets while tracking actions and aligning schedules.
  • Generate innovative optical module or system concepts to fulfill product specifications.
  • Conduct detailed optical design, component layout, and ray tracing for new or enhanced optical subsystems.
  • Perform optical tolerance analysis at both system and subsystem levels.
  • Validate design concepts through prototype builds, testing, and analytical evaluation.
  • Develop and execute test plans, create testing procedures, conduct tests, and analyze data to evaluate performance.
  • Troubleshoot and analyze performance issues in existing systems, collaborating with Reliability and Test Engineers to plan investigations and propose solutions.
  • Assemble and test opto-mechanical and electro-optic prototypes.
  • Collaborate with Mechanical Engineers and CAD Designers to ensure comprehensive documentation of designs, including Bills of Materials, drawings, and procedural guidelines.
  • Work with manufacturing engineering to develop and implement designs that enhance manufacturability.
  • Coordinate with purchasing to acquire prototype components for assembly.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing personnel to oversee the assembly of pilot production units.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

A Master's degree in Optics Engineering, Physics, or Electrical Engineering with a minimum of 8 years of relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in the same fields with at least 3 years of applicable work experience is required.

  • At least eight (8) years of experience in Optical or Opto-mechanical Design.
  • Experience in Product Development is preferred, including managing Bills of Materials, vendor interactions, material procurement for prototyping, and change management.
  • Familiarity with Excimer Lasers is advantageous.
  • Experience in designing, specifying components for, and constructing experimental setups and prototypes.
  • Ability to conduct systematic experimental measurements with a solid grasp of metrology error analysis.
  • Experience in mounting optical components to minimize mechanical and thermal stress, with knowledge of FEA and modal analysis being a plus.
  • Demonstrated creativity in addressing complex optical design challenges, including considerations for contamination control and robustness.
  • In-depth understanding of optical engineering principles.
  • Proficiency in ray tracing using Optical Design Software (such as Oslo, Zemax, Code 5, etc.).
  • Competence in using MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic email systems.

Skills

In this dynamic role, you will face new challenges regularly, requiring collaboration and innovative problem-solving. You will work in a supportive environment that values diverse perspectives and encourages creative solutions. Flexibility and trust in your approach to tasks and challenges are paramount.

To excel in this position, the following skills are essential:

  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively within a development team.
  • Self-motivation and adaptability in a fast-paced, high-tech environment.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Capability to analyze data statistically and report findings effectively through written and graphical formats.
  • Strong customer service skills, with a deep understanding of relationship building.

Additional Information

We offer competitive compensation and benefits, including medical, dental, vision, 401(K), and flexible spending accounts.

This position requires access to controlled technology as defined in the Export Administration Regulations. Qualified candidates must be legally authorized to access such controlled technology prior to starting work.
