Job Summary
The Lead Optical Systems Engineer will join an innovative engineering team focused on developing cutting-edge laser components and systems, transitioning them into market-ready products. This role may involve acting as a technical lead while also contributing to the analysis, modeling, design, prototyping, and testing of laser systems. The successful candidate will be responsible for requirement flow-down, electro-optical design, supplier interactions, and the planning and execution of integration and testing processes. Additionally, this position will tackle complex challenges requiring a profound understanding of material science and laser technology, contributing to intellectual property, publications, and business development.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct optical design and tolerance analysis utilizing Zemax and Matlab.
- Design, construct, and align optical bench setups for prototype and production design verification testing, developing alignment procedures.
- Take individual responsibility for significant portions of complex development projects.
- Serve as the optical and laser lead for systems and subsystems, guiding them from initial concepts to product prototypes and initial production units, with a focus on optical and opto-mechanical aspects.
- Evaluate failure modes, perform root cause analysis, and implement corrective actions for company products, emphasizing optical and opto-mechanical considerations.
- Collaborate effectively within a multi-functional team and with customers and suppliers, producing reports and contributing to peer-reviewed publications and invention disclosures.
- Communicate clearly, both in writing and verbally, with manufacturing, supply chain, program management, and customers as needed.
- Support and promote the mission, values, and culture of the organization.
- Participate in relevant engineering, customer, or business meetings.
Ideal Candidate Qualifications
- Expertise in Zemax OpticStudio, with experience in both sequential and non-sequential simulations and scripting or interfacing with Matlab for design automation. Prior experience in laser optical system design is preferred.
- Proficient in aligning and integrating complex optical table setups.
- Comprehensive understanding of mechanical, thermal, electrical, and optical designs and components, and their interactions to meet performance specifications.
- Programming skills in Matlab, Labview, Python, or C++.
- Experience with Solidworks.
- Hands-on experience in the development, prototyping, testing, or transition to production of complex electro-optical and mechanical systems.
- Appreciation for engineering process rigor, appropriately applied based on product and process maturity.
- Knowledge of semiconductor laser technology, laser and optical design and modeling, optical components and materials from UV to IR, and optical metrology and measurement equipment.
- Experience with multimode, single mode, and polarization-maintaining fiber.
- Familiarity with laser packaging techniques.
- Understanding of electronic test equipment for time-domain and frequency-domain measurements, control theory, and signal processing.
Education and Experience
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering (Master's preferred) or a related technical field with a minimum of 5 years of experience in the optical or laser-related industry.
- Fluency in relevant technologies and application domains.
- Proven ability to lead a technical group independently.
Security Clearance
U.S. Citizenship is required. This position necessitates an active DOD Secret-level security clearance or the ability to obtain such clearance within a reasonable timeframe after employment commencement.
Compensation
The expected salary range for this position is $113,385/year - $176,030/year. Factors such as the scope and responsibilities of the position, relevant work experience, education, certifications, and key skills will be considered when extending an offer.
