Position Overview
The Leidos Innovations Center is seeking a Principal Optical Design Engineer to contribute to the advancement of cutting-edge optical technologies. This role presents an opportunity to engage in the development of innovative optical solutions that may be integrated into next-generation space systems. As a Principal Engineer, you will play a pivotal role in a rapidly expanding sector by spearheading the design, development, and demonstration of novel optical technologies aimed at optimizing the size, weight, power, and cost of compact satellite optical payloads, while potentially enhancing performance to unlock new capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Utilize your expertise in optical design and emerging technologies to conduct trade analyses focused on performance metrics, including size, weight, and power for satellite optical payloads.
- Employ modeling tools to gain insights into the co-design of various optical technologies within a single payload.
- Facilitate collaboration with optical designers and team members to assess and refine optical technologies, establishing a pathway for their transition to production and integration.
- Develop a strategic roadmap for innovative imaging technologies applicable to future space systems, while exploring early-stage concepts.
Essential Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Physics, Optics, or a related field with a minimum of 12 years of relevant experience; or a Master's degree with 10+ years; or a Doctorate with 8+ years of experience.
- Must possess US citizenship.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance is required.
- Demonstrated expertise in evaluating the performance of optical components, including metrics such as point spread functions (PSFs) and modulation transfer functions (MTFs).
- Proficient in using finite element-based design tools such as COMSOL, CST, or Lumerical.
- Experience with optical design software like Zemax or CODE V is essential.
- Strong proficiency in Windows operating systems.
- Exceptional communication skills with a proven track record of working directly with clients to achieve results.
- Mission-driven with a strong capability to lead a team towards achieving objectives and delivering tangible products.
- Proficient in technical writing, documentation, and organizational skills.
- Self-motivated with a robust sense of initiative and the ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
- Possession of an active TS or TS/SCI security clearance.
- Experience in the development of hybrid optical systems incorporating novel optical components.
- Familiarity with the fabrication and characterization of optics, including diffractive and meta-optics.
- Experience in proposal development and business development activities.
