Overview

Responsible for overseeing and delivering recreational services tailored for youth; plans and manages engaging activities for individuals and groups within juvenile facilities under the Dallas County Juvenile Probation Department.

Key Responsibilities

Ensures the provision of supervision and support for youths, focusing on rehabilitation efforts. Maintains comprehensive and precise records of all interactions with youth, including program documentation, participant files, daily attendance, and progress assessments. Prepares and submits regular activity reports to management.

Evaluates the recreational interests and needs of the youth in each facility to develop and implement suitable program activities.

Manages the upkeep and utilization of recreational equipment, ensuring proper maintenance, restocking, training on safe usage, and adherence to safety protocols. Conducts interviews with clients to collect relevant information, assesses their needs, and formulates appropriate services.

Engages with program participants individually, in small groups, and during events to provide mentorship and guidance. Trains and supports other facility staff in effectively executing recreational program activities as required.

Acts as a backup for staff, performing essential duties such as administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, and managing youth behavior.

Utilizes approved techniques for managing youth behavior, including physical restraint when necessary, in accordance with established guidelines.

Identifies grant opportunities and collaborates in the creation of grant proposals and reports to secure additional funding for recreational initiatives, including proposals that reflect emerging trends in the field.

Participates in team meetings to discuss progress and share critical information essential for addressing the needs of clients. Undertakes additional responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Recreation, Health and Human Performance, Applied Exercise and Sport Science, or a related field.

A minimum of one year of relevant experience supervising or providing recreational activities for youth in community settings, particularly in sports or leisure activities for adolescents.

Skills and Requirements

Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, departments, and the public.

Must obtain First Aid/CPR Certification within 90 days of employment and meet certification requirements as mandated by applicable standards within six months. Ongoing training of 40 hours annually is required.

Physical capability to perform scheduled recreational activities, including CPR, first aid, and behavior management techniques, as outlined in the approved training curriculum.

A valid Texas Driver's License and a clean driving record are mandatory. Candidates must provide a 10-year driving history.

Compliance with local regulations regarding driving records is essential. Candidates must pass a thorough background check and mandatory drug testing prior to employment, with ongoing random testing during employment.

This role requires effective management of schedules, vendors, and equipment, as well as the ability to work with participants of varying abilities.

Work Environment

Position involves working within both secured and unsecured facilities, with potential exposure to various health risks. The ability to restrain and/or pursue youths may be necessary. Moderate physical exertion is required, including occasional lifting of weights between 26-50 pounds.
