Overview
Oversees a specialized unit dedicated to delivering services to adolescents under departmental supervision, encompassing evaluation, judicial processing, placement, and coordination among treatment providers and collaborative team members.

Management Responsibilities:
Leads a team consisting of one (1) Assistant Supervisor and approximately ten (10) non-exempt staff members, serving between 200 to 500 youths and families annually, with an operational budget ranging from $200,000 to $500,000.

Directs the operations of a specialized unit by planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling all activities to ensure high-quality service delivery, supervision, and that the health, safety, and equipment needs of both staff and youths are adequately addressed.

Manages case assignments by maintaining a balanced caseload/workload, determining, scheduling, and prioritizing tasks, and conducting administrative hearings to uphold high standards of rehabilitative services; reviews case files and provides training based on evaluations.

Responsible for hiring, training, and supervising staff. Develops, implements, and assesses strategic plans, policies, and procedures to achieve objectives.

Engages in staff and management meetings, task forces, and committees to facilitate information sharing, planning, and problem-solving, and participates in in-service training sessions.

Collects, maintains, and analyzes statistical data and other information systems to ensure the efficiency and effectiveness of personnel and resources.

Reviews and approves case transfers from the intake unit to other units and assists with assessments of referred youths during periods of increased caseload or staff shortages.

Acts as a backup for staff and performs all necessary duties, including administering medications, transporting youths to appointments, processing intake assessments or discharges, and managing youth discipline.

Must be physically capable of performing handling techniques, including takedowns, chasing, and restraining youth as mandated by the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).

Assists in budget development and oversight by managing supply and equipment inventories, forecasting needs, preparing purchase requests, and approving requisitions and purchase orders.

Communicates with juvenile court judges, court clerks, attorneys, members of the District Attorney's Office, law enforcement, and community leaders for the purpose of information sharing, problem-solving, and fostering positive public relations and resource development.

Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:


A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in Criminal Law, Corrections, Counseling, Law, Business Management, Public Administration, Sociology, Cultural Anthropology, Education, or a related field.

A minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory role.

Essential Skills and Knowledge:
Proficient in standard software applications.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and to establish and maintain productive working relationships with colleagues, departments, and the public.

Must possess comprehensive knowledge of correctional casework principles and management, with experience in the specialized area of assignment preferred.

Requires thorough understanding of all applicable federal, state, and local regulations and standards. Must become a Certified Juvenile Probation Officer within six months of employment. Must hold a valid Texas Driver's License with a clean driving record. Must pass a comprehensive background check. Mandatory drug testing prior to employment and subject to random, unannounced drug and/or alcohol testing during employment. The employee may also be subject to shift changes.

  • This position involves working with juveniles who may have engaged in dangerous or aggressive behavior; a high tolerance for working in an emotionally demanding and stressful environment is essential.
  • Employees may be reassigned to different departments, shifts, locations, or facilities based on departmental needs.
  • Working in a 24-hour facility may require mandatory overtime or remaining on duty for additional shifts.
  • The incumbent may be classified as 'essential personnel' and may be required to report to a work location or alternate site at any time, as directed by their supervisor.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age (for applicable positions) and must successfully complete all components (physical/written) of the Juvenile Academy to maintain employment or meet all standards related to PREA and Ethics for specific roles.

Work Environment:
Standard office environment with the requirement to visit various off-site locations.
