Job Overview

Title: Student Support Specialist
Position Type: Full-time
Salary: $42,197 per annum
Working Hours: This role requires a commitment of 7.5 hours per day, scheduled between 7:30 am and 8:00 pm, Monday through Friday, excluding a lunch break. One evening shift per week will be required, with specific hours to be agreed upon at the start of employment. Additional evening and weekend work may be necessary occasionally.

Role Summary

The Student Support Specialist is primarily responsible for collaborating with students and educators to facilitate registration, assessments, and suitable placement of students. This role also involves maintaining student records with confidentiality and supporting the Adult Education Literacy Program by implementing best practices as outlined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).

Key Responsibilities
  1. Guide students in selecting appropriate class placements and identifying their goals.
  2. Address individual student challenges through tailored support services.
  3. Maintain and update class and student records confidentially.
  4. Assist with student registration, orientation, and career readiness initiatives.
  5. Ensure compliance with guidelines for students with special needs.
  6. Communicate with various human service agencies and connect students with community resources.
  7. Create documentation in line with organizational policies.
  8. Collaborate with the Director of Literacy Programs and other coordinators to organize new staff orientation sessions.
  9. Deliver Career Awareness and College Readiness workshops for instructional staff.
  10. Monitor class attendance to identify students who may require additional support.
  11. Participate in training for TABE, CASAS, eData, and other Adult Education programs as required.
  12. Facilitate student access to resources for transitioning to the workforce or further education, maintaining all relevant records.
  13. Document case notes for students needing structured case management.
  14. Engage in the Program Improvement/Development Plan process.
  15. Foster effective communication and relationships with program staff and community agencies.
  16. Submit reports as requested by the department supervisor.
  17. Complete and submit monthly time and effort logs to the fiscal department.
  18. Track time using the Career Services Time Tracker Form weekly.
  19. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

Required:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, or a related Human Services field.
  2. A minimum of three (3) years of experience working with adult learners.
  3. Experience supporting individuals with diverse literacy needs.
  4. Bilingual in Spanish and English.

Preferred:

  1. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  2. Ability to research data and generate reports.
  3. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Excellent organizational abilities.
  5. At least two (2) years of case management experience.
Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated effective record-keeping skills, excellent communication and public speaking abilities, and strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups. Outstanding organizational skills and proficiency in written communication, particularly in report writing and business correspondence. Familiarity with the Community College and Higher Education systems is preferred.

Communication Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret various business documents, professional journals, and governmental regulations. Proficient in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals. Capable of effectively presenting information and responding to inquiries from students, faculty, staff, and the public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to interpret basic statistical data.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and address a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Capable of interpreting various instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
