Job Overview

Title: Student Support Specialist
Position Type: Full-time
Salary: $42,197 per year

Working Hours

This role requires a commitment of 7.5 hours per day, scheduled between 7:30 am and 8:00 pm, Monday through Friday, excluding a lunch break. The position includes one evening shift per week, with specific hours to be agreed upon with the supervisor at the start of employment.

Note: Additional evening and weekend work may be required occasionally, with the option for the employee to choose whether to work these hours in addition to or instead of regular hours.

Position Summary

The Student Support Specialist is primarily responsible for collaborating with students and educators to facilitate registration, assessments, and appropriate student placement. This role also involves maintaining student records with confidentiality and supporting the Adult Education Literacy Program by implementing best practices as outlined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE).

Key Responsibilities
  1. Guide students in selecting suitable class placements, identifying goals, and conducting assessments.
  2. Address individual student challenges through tailored support services.
  3. Maintain and update class and student records in compliance with confidentiality standards.
  4. Assist with student registration, orientation, and career readiness initiatives.
  5. Ensure compliance with guidelines for students with special needs.
  6. Maintain communication with various human service agencies and refer students to appropriate community resources.
  7. Create documentation in alignment with RACC's policies.
  8. Collaborate with the Director of Literacy Programs, Professional Development Coordinator, and Enrollment Support Specialist to organize new staff orientation sessions.
  9. Facilitate Career Awareness and College Readiness workshops for instructional staff to incorporate into their curriculum.
  10. Review class attendance records to identify students who may require additional support.
  11. Participate in training for TABE, CASAS, eData, and other Adult Education training as mandated by PDE guidelines or required by RACC.
  12. Provide students with resources to aid their transition to the workforce or postsecondary education/training, while maintaining all student transition records for PDE and college reporting.
  13. Document case notes for students needing planned case management.
  14. Engage in the Program Improvement/Program Development Plan process.
  15. Foster effective communication and working relationships with program staff, agencies, and class site locations.
  16. Submit reports as requested by the department supervisor.
  17. Complete and submit monthly time and effort logs to the fiscal department on the first business day of each month for the previous month.
  18. Record time in the Career Services Time Tracker Form weekly.
  19. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Education and Experience

Required:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, or a Human Service-related field.
  2. A minimum of three (3) years of experience working with adult learners.
  3. Experience supporting individuals with diverse literacy needs.
  4. Bilingual in Spanish and English.

Preferred:

  1. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  2. Ability to research data and develop comprehensive reports.
  3. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Excellent organizational skills.
  5. A minimum of two (2) years of case management experience.
Other Skills and Abilities

Demonstrated effective record-keeping skills, excellent communication and public speaking abilities, and strong interpersonal skills. The candidate should be adept at working collaboratively with others and possess outstanding organizational capabilities. Exceptional written communication skills, particularly in report writing and business correspondence, are essential. Familiarity with the Community College and Higher Education system is preferred.

Communication Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business publications, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Competence in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals is required. The candidate must effectively present information and respond to inquiries from groups of students, faculty, staff, external organizations, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to interpret basic statistical data.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and manage a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization. Capability to interpret a range of instructions provided in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
