Job Overview

Title: Student Support Specialist

Position Type: Full-time

Salary: $42,197 per annum

Working Hours: This role requires a commitment of 7.5 hours per day (between 7:30 am and 8:00 pm) from Monday to Friday, excluding a half-hour or one-hour lunch break. The position will necessitate working one evening per week, with specific hours to be agreed upon between the supervisor and the employee at the commencement of employment.

Note: Additional evening and weekend work may be required occasionally, with the option for the employee to work this time in addition to or in lieu of regular hours.

Position Summary

The Student Support Specialist is primarily responsible for collaborating with students and educators to facilitate registration, testing, and suitable placement of students. This role also involves maintaining student records with confidentiality and supporting the Adult Education Literacy Program by implementing best practices as outlined by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Guide students regarding appropriate class placements, goal setting, and assessments.
  2. Address individual student barriers to learning through tailored support services.
  3. Maintain and update class and student records for the College and PDE while ensuring confidentiality.
  4. Assist with student registration, orientation, and career readiness initiatives.
  5. Ensure compliance with guidelines for students with special needs.
  6. Communicate with various human service agencies and refer students to relevant community resources.
  7. Create documentation in accordance with organizational policies.
  8. Collaborate with the Director of Literacy Programs, Professional Development Coordinator, and Enrollment Support Specialist to organize new staff orientation sessions.
  9. Present Career Awareness and College Readiness resources and workshops for instructional staff to incorporate into the curriculum.
  10. Review class attendance records to identify students who may require additional support.
  11. Participate in training for TABE, CASAS, eData, and other Adult Education training as required by PDE guidelines or the organization.
  12. Provide students with access to resources that facilitate their transition to the workforce or postsecondary education/training, while maintaining all student transition records for PDE and college reporting.
  13. Document case notes for students needing planned case management.
  14. Engage in the Program Improvement/Program Development Plan process.
  15. Foster effective communication and working relationships with program staff, agencies, and class site locations.
  16. Submit reports as requested by the department supervisor.
  17. Complete and submit monthly time and effort logs to the fiscal department on the first business day of each month for the previous month.
  18. Record time in the Career Services Time Tracker Form weekly.
  19. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position does not entail supervisory responsibilities.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

Required:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Education, or a Human Service-related field.
  2. A minimum of three (3) years of experience working with adult learners.
  3. Experience in supporting individuals with diverse literacy needs.
  4. Bilingual in Spanish and English.

Preferred:

  1. Proficiency in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
  2. Demonstrated ability to research data and generate reports.
  3. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  4. Excellent organizational abilities.
  5. A minimum of two (2) years of case management experience.
Other Skills and Abilities:

Effective record-keeping skills, exceptional communication and public speaking abilities, and strong interpersonal skills are essential. The candidate should be capable of working well with diverse groups of people and possess outstanding organizational skills. Excellent written communication skills, particularly in report writing and business correspondence, are also necessary. Familiarity with the Community College and Higher Education system is preferred.

Communication Skills:

The ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations is required. Candidates should be able to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals effectively. The ability to present information and respond to inquiries from groups of students, faculty, staff, outside organizations, and the general public is essential.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to interpret basic statistical information.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to solve practical problems and address a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret various instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
