Position Overview:
We are in search of a dedicated Chief Executive Officer to lead the esteemed Ruth Bancroft Garden, a prominent nonprofit public garden celebrated for its exquisite dry garden design and remarkable plant collection.
Key Responsibilities:
The CEO will be tasked with steering the organization's mission to safeguard and enhance its extraordinary assortment of water-efficient plants and landscape design for public enjoyment and education.
The garden boasts a workforce of over 40 individuals and attracts more than 40,000 visitors annually, supported by a thriving retail nursery and a membership base that has seen significant growth, tripling in size over the last five years.
The organization also hosts numerous private events, offers over 80 diverse educational classes, and features seasonal exhibitions, including a summer sculpture show and a winter light display.
With annual revenues in the mid-seven figures and a growth rate exceeding 20% per year, the CEO is expected to sustain and amplify this momentum.
General Duties:
The CEO will inspire a talented team to engage the public, expand membership, and enhance the donor and volunteer network. Strong analytical capabilities are essential, along with proficiency in systems that facilitate analysis and reporting. The CEO must possess robust public relations, marketing, and social media skills to elevate the Garden's profile within the community.
The primary financial responsibilities include boosting memberships, donations, plant sales, design services, and event revenues while effectively managing costs. The CEO will also be responsible for establishing a comprehensive donation and grant program, which currently represents a small portion of total revenue.
Additional financial duties encompass budgeting and the ability to communicate financial objectives and reports to both staff and the Board of Directors.
Collaboration and Leadership:
The CEO will ensure productive collaboration among staff by recognizing and nurturing their strengths and abilities, fostering a safe, creative, dynamic, and diverse work environment to achieve the Garden's mission.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, ideally in business administration, public administration, marketing, or related fields, along with a minimum of ten years of senior management experience.
Proficient financial management skills, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting are required. A background in sales and sales management is essential, along with a proven track record of generating new revenue streams and enhancing financial outcomes.
The ideal candidate will understand effective fundraising systems and work collaboratively with Board and staff members to meet the Garden's financial objectives. Experience in building strong relationships with funders and donors, along with a history of successful fundraising, is highly desirable.
A passion for plants and proven supervisory skills in recruiting and mentoring staff are advantageous. Exceptional organizational skills, including planning, delegating, and development, are necessary, as well as strong written and verbal communication abilities, including public speaking experience.
A strong work ethic and the ability to maintain a flexible schedule are essential.
Compensation:
The salary range for this position is $150,000.00 – $175,000.00 per year, accompanied by benefits including a 401(k), health, vision, and dental insurance, and paid time off.
