Position Overview

Are you an experienced Law Enforcement Officer seeking a vibrant, community-focused environment to serve and protect? Key Responsibilities

The following duties are essential for Law Enforcement Officers within the City of Walnut Creek:
  • Conduct patrols in designated areas to prevent and detect criminal activity while enforcing laws and regulations; respond to and investigate reported incidents; document and report complaints, accidents, offenses, and property damage; manage traffic flow.
  • Execute arrests and inform suspects of their rights; compile reports on arrests and property seizures; examine crime scenes and interview witnesses; verify alibis and assess the credibility of statements; analyze evidence and information related to criminal activities; track the progress of investigations and prepare cases for court; serve warrants; provide testimony in court regarding arrests and law enforcement actions.
  • Monitor and report conditions that may lead to criminal activity; offer assistance and information to the public; issue warnings and citations for traffic violations and inspect vehicles; transport and search detainees.
  • Engage in special investigations and projects; deliver presentations to schools, businesses, and community groups; assist in training and mentoring new personnel.
  • May serve as a temporary supervisor or Watch Commander.

Qualifications

The position of Law Enforcement Officer at the City of Walnut Creek requires candidates to meet the following educational and experiential criteria:
  1. High school diploma (or equivalent);
  2. Completion of 60 semester units from an accredited college or university (up to 15 units from the police academy may be combined with other college units to fulfill the 60 semester units);
  3. Possession of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate (out-of-state applicants may qualify for lateral hiring through the "Basic Course Waiver Process" administered by California P.O.S.T.);
  4. Successful completion of the probationary period as a Law Enforcement Officer. Candidates currently on probation at their agency should apply through the "Academy Graduate" application process.

Special Requirements
  • Possession of or ability to obtain a Class C California Driver's License and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
  • Candidates must meet the City's medical standards related to physical requirements prior to employment.
  • Ability to operate a vehicle safely under various conditions.
  • Proficient in handling, maintaining, and utilizing weapons.
  • Ability to subdue aggressors using batons, tasers, pepper spray, and control holds.
  • Knowledge of city and departmental policies and applicable laws.
  • Ability to respond to citizen inquiries in person, by phone, and in writing.
  • Capable of administering CPR and other first aid measures.
  • Physical capability to lift, carry, drag, and pull individuals and objects.
  • Effective communication skills with citizens during emergencies.
  • Ability to conduct roadside sobriety tests and utilize chemical testing kits.
  • Proficient in generating computer-based reports.

Application Process

Applicants must complete an online employment application and respond to supplemental questions. Applications will be reviewed, and qualified candidates will be placed on an eligibility list. Those on the list will be invited to participate in the testing process, which includes an interview with the Police Recruitment Team. Successful candidates will then be interviewed by the Police Chief.

All candidates will undergo a comprehensive background investigation, including criminal history checks, fingerprinting, driving history review, credit checks, and reference checks. A pre-employment medical examination, drug screening, physical agility test, and psychological evaluation will also be required. The City reserves the right to request a polygraph examination.
