Key Responsibilities

The role of a Law Enforcement Officer encompasses a variety of duties, including:

  • Conducting patrols in designated areas to prevent and detect criminal activity while enforcing laws and regulations.
  • Responding to and investigating reported incidents or crimes, documenting complaints, accidents, and property damage.
  • Making arrests and informing suspects of their rights, as well as preparing detailed reports on arrests and property impounded.
  • Inspecting crime scenes, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing clues to piece together how crimes were committed.
  • Monitoring conditions that may lead to crime and providing assistance and information to the public.
  • Issuing warnings and citations to traffic violators and inspecting vehicles.
  • Conducting special investigations and community outreach presentations.
  • Assisting in the training and development of new officers.

Qualifications

To qualify for the position of Law Enforcement Officer, candidates must meet the following educational and experiential criteria:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of 60 semester units from an accredited college or university (up to 15 units from the police academy may be combined with other college units).
  • Possession of a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate (out-of-state applicants may qualify through the Basic Course Waiver Process).
  • Successful completion of the probationary period as a Law Enforcement Officer.

Special Requirements

Applicants must possess or be able to obtain a Class C California Driver's License and maintain a good driving record. Candidates must also meet the City's medical standards and be capable of:

  • Safely operating a vehicle under various conditions.
  • Handling and utilizing law enforcement equipment.
  • Subduing individuals using appropriate techniques.
  • Communicating effectively with the public during emergencies.
  • Administering first aid and CPR.

Application Process

Interested candidates must complete an online employment application and respond to supplemental questions. Applications will be reviewed, and qualified candidates will be placed on an eligibility list for further testing, including interviews with the Police Recruitment Team and the Police Chief.

All candidates will undergo a thorough background investigation, including checks of criminal history, driving records, and previous employment references. The City of Walnut Creek is committed to maintaining the highest standards of integrity and honesty throughout the selection process.
