The Denver Public Library Friends Foundation operates as a 501c3 nonprofit entity dedicated to supporting the Denver Public Library through various fundraising and advocacy efforts.

Our philanthropic initiatives bolster the library's financial resources, enabling it to achieve its mission. We also advocate for public funding to enhance community services and library programs.

The Foundation engages in several core activities, including: fundraising from corporate, foundation, and individual donors; membership drives; online and in-person sales of books and merchandise; hosting the Booklovers Ball and other fundraising events; promoting the library within the community; advocating to government officials and the public; and managing and expanding our endowment.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Executive Director will act as the chief executive officer, primary fundraiser, and advocate for the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation (DPLFF). This role requires collaboration with staff and the Board of Trustees to enhance the Foundation's fundraising capabilities and work towards our vision of becoming one of the top 10 library foundations in the nation.

The Executive Director will oversee the strategic plan, operational execution, staff management, and serve as the chief spokesperson alongside the Board Chair, primarily reporting to the Foundation Board Chair and secondarily to the Personnel Committee.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising & Financial Oversight

  • Collaborate with the Board, DPLFF staff, and the City Librarian to develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, including major gifts, planned giving, annual campaigns, corporate sponsorships, and special events.
  • Manage DPLFF's financial operations, establishing and monitoring the operational budget.

Advocacy Efforts

  • Work with the City Librarian, DPLFF Board, and Advocacy Committee to formulate and execute strategies that support critical library initiatives and advocate for necessary funding from the City.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community stakeholders, City Council members, the Mayor, and elected officials to address pressing library needs.

Board Engagement

  • Foster strong relationships with current and former Trustees, collaborating with the Board to create strategic and fundraising plans.
  • Assist the Board in recruiting, developing, and engaging Trustees, including committee assignments.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiatives

  • Design and implement plans related to equity, diversity, and inclusion in collaboration with the EDI Committee, ensuring alignment with library objectives.

Marketing and Communications

  • Oversee the Foundation's marketing and communication strategies, including brand development, marketing materials, advertising, and media relations.
  • Represent DPLFF to external stakeholders, including volunteers, to maintain informed and supportive relationships.

Staff Leadership

  • Communicate the organizational vision to staff, providing leadership, direction, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to enhance team performance.

Thought Leadership

  • Offer innovative and creative approaches to fundraising, advocacy, and organizational management, positioning DPLFF as a leader in the sector.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of experience in the nonprofit sector, preferably within a foundation.
  • 5+ years in a leadership role within a nonprofit or foundation.
  • Proven track record in fundraising and fundraising management.
  • Knowledge and experience in advocacy.
  • Experience managing a successful team.
  • Familiarity with the library sector or supporting organizations.
  • Background in financial management, including budgets and expenses.
  • Understanding of the fundraising and political landscape in Denver.
  • Experience with a reputable organization.
  • Ability to work effectively across all levels of an organization.
  • Desire to elevate an organization to a leadership position in its field.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Competitive annual salary range of $145,000 - $180,000, commensurate with experience.
