The Denver Public Library Friends Foundation is a 501c3 nonprofit entity dedicated to enhancing the Denver Public Library through effective fundraising and advocacy efforts.

Our contributions play a vital role in supporting the library's operational budget, enabling it to fulfill its mission. We also advocate for public funding to enrich community services and enhance library programs.

The Foundation's primary activities include: fundraising from corporate, foundation, and individual donors; managing memberships; conducting online and in-person sales of books and merchandise; organizing the Booklovers Ball and other fundraising events; promoting the library within the community; advocating to elected officials and the public; and managing and growing our endowment.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Executive Director acts as the chief executive officer, principal fundraiser, and advocate, responsible for providing strategic leadership and overall management of the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation (DPLFF). Working closely with staff and the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director aims to enhance DPLFF's fundraising capabilities and achieve the vision of becoming one of the top 10 library foundations in the United States.

This role encompasses oversight of the strategic plan, operational execution, staff management, and serves as the chief spokesperson alongside the Board Chair, reporting primarily to the Foundation Board Chair and secondarily to the Personnel Committee.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising & Financial Oversight

  • Collaborate with the Board, DPLFF staff, and the City Librarian to design and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, including major gifts, planned giving, annual contributions, corporate sponsorships, and special events.
  • Oversee the financial operations of DPLFF; establish, implement, and monitor the annual operating budget.

Advocacy Efforts

  • In partnership with the City Librarian, the DPLFF Board, and the Advocacy Committee, formulate and execute strategies to support critical library initiatives and advocate for necessary funding from the City.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community stakeholders, City Council members, the Mayor, and state and federal officials to address pressing library needs.

Board Engagement

  • Foster strong relationships with current and former Trustees; collaborate with the Board to develop strategic and fundraising initiatives.
  • Assist the Board in recruiting, developing, and engaging Trustees, including committee assignments.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Initiatives

  • Work with the EDI Committee to develop and implement plans that align with the library's goals and activities.

Marketing and Communication Strategies

  • Oversee DPLFF's marketing and communication efforts, including brand development, marketing materials, advertising, digital outreach, and media relations.
  • Represent DPLFF to external stakeholders, including volunteers, to foster informed and supportive relationships.

Staff Leadership

  • Articulate and communicate the organizational vision to staff, providing leadership, direction, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to enhance individual and team performance.

Innovative Leadership

  • Offer creative and innovative solutions to fundraising, advocacy, and organizational management, positioning DPLFF as a leader in the sector.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of experience in the nonprofit sector, preferably within a foundation.
  • 5+ years in a leadership role within a foundation or nonprofit organization.
  • Proven track record in fundraising and fundraising management.
  • Experience and/or knowledge in advocacy efforts.
  • Strong personnel management skills with a successful team.
  • Familiarity with the library sector or supporting organizations.
  • Experience in financial management of budgets and expenses.
  • Understanding of the fundraising and political landscape in Denver.
  • Experience with a reputable organization.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Desire and capability to elevate the organization to a leadership position in its field.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Expected annual salary range of $145,000 - $180,000, commensurate with experience.
