This is a senior leadership position within the Life Underwriting department at USAA, reporting directly to the Chief Life Underwriter. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading a team of underwriting professionals in setting and implementing life insurance underwriting policies and procedures.
Key Responsibilities- Leadership and Team Management: Provide day-to-day supervision and management support for the Life Company underwriting department, including recruiting, developing, and retaining high-performing teams.
- Underwriting Policy Development: Collaborate with the Chief Life Underwriter and Medical Directors to establish medical underwriting policies and practices, ensuring alignment with expected mortality and morbidity performance.
- Complex Case Management: Provide executive thought leadership on complex and unique underwriting cases and contestable claims, utilizing sound underwriting judgment and expertise.
- Analytics and Reporting: Oversee and conduct ad-hoc mortality and risk classification trend analyses, identifying areas for process improvement and operational efficiencies.
- Underwriting Automation: Lead the development of the Life Underwriting Policy team toward optimization of automated underwriting decision-making, including the development and implementation of underwriting rules engines.
- Compliance and Risk Management: Ensure compliance with legislation and regulation regarding life insurance underwriting policies, practices, and procedures, and identify and mitigate risks associated with business activities.
- Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with reinsurance and key business partners to promote a culture of continuous improvement, solve business challenges, and meet business goals.
- Education: Bachelor's Degree; OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
- Experience: 10 years of life insurance underwriting experience with in-depth understanding of medical, non-medical, and financial underwriting principles and practices. 4 years of people leadership experience in a life insurance underwriting function to include building, managing, and/or developing high-performing teams.
- Skills and Certifications: Fellow of the Academy of Life Underwriting (FALU), Fellow of the Life Management Institute (FLMI), and deep technical knowledge of underwriting systems, including underwriting rules engines and rules management.
