The Denver Public Library Friends Foundation is a nonprofit entity dedicated to supporting the Denver Public Library through various fundraising initiatives and advocacy efforts.

Our charitable contributions enhance the library's budget, enabling it to fulfill its mission. We also advocate for public funding to enrich community services and enhance library programs.

The Foundation's primary activities include: fundraising from corporate sponsors, foundations, and individual donors; membership drives; online and physical sales of books and merchandise; hosting events such as the Booklovers Ball; promoting the library within the community; advocating to elected officials and the public; and managing and growing our endowment.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Executive Director acts as the chief executive officer, principal fundraiser, and advocate, responsible for strategic leadership and comprehensive management of the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation (DPLFF). Working closely with staff and the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director aims to enhance DPLFF's fundraising capabilities and achieve the vision of becoming one of the top 10 library foundations in the United States.

This role encompasses oversight of the strategic plan, operational execution, staff management, and serves as the primary spokesperson alongside the Board Chair, reporting primarily to the Foundation Board Chair and secondarily to the Personnel Committee.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising & Financial Oversight

  • Collaborate with the Board, DPLFF staff, and the City Librarian to design and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, including major gifts, planned giving, annual contributions, corporate sponsorships, and special events.
  • Oversee financial operations of DPLFF; establish, implement, and monitor the operational budget.

Advocacy Initiatives

  • Work with the City Librarian, DPLFF Board, and Advocacy Committee to develop and execute strategies that support critical library initiatives and advocate for necessary funding from the City.
  • Build and maintain relationships with community stakeholders, City Council members, the Mayor, and state and federal officials to address pressing library needs.

Board Engagement

  • Foster strong relationships with current and former Trustees; collaborate with the Board to create strategic and fundraising plans.
  • Assist the Board in recruiting, developing, and engaging Trustees, including committee assignments.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

  • Develop and implement plans related to equity, diversity, and inclusion in collaboration with the EDI Committee, ensuring alignment with the library's objectives.

Marketing and Communications

  • Oversee DPLFF's marketing and communication strategies, including brand development, advertising, and media relations.
  • Represent DPLFF to external stakeholders, including volunteers, to maintain informed and supportive relationships.

Staff Leadership

  • Communicate the organizational vision to staff, providing leadership, direction, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to enhance team performance.

Innovative Leadership

  • Offer creative and innovative solutions for fundraising, advocacy, and organizational management to position DPLFF as a leader in the sector.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • 10+ years of experience in the nonprofit sector, preferably within a foundation.
  • 5+ years in a leadership role within a nonprofit or foundation.
  • Proven track record in fundraising and fundraising management.
  • Experience in advocacy efforts.
  • Successful personnel management experience.
  • Knowledge of the library sector or related support organizations.
  • Experience managing budgets and financial operations.
  • Familiarity with the fundraising and political landscape in Denver.
  • Experience with a reputable organization.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Desire to elevate the organization to a leadership position in its field.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

  • Expected annual salary range of $145,000 - $180,000, based on experience.
