The Foundation's philanthropic contributions are vital in bolstering the library's financial resources, enabling it to fulfill its mission. Additionally, the Foundation advocates for public funding to enhance community services and library programs.
The Foundation's primary functions include: engaging in fundraising activities with corporate partners, foundations, and individual donors; managing memberships; conducting online and in-person sales of books and merchandise; organizing the Booklovers Ball and other fundraising events; promoting the library within the community; advocating to elected officials and the public; and overseeing the growth of the endowment.
ROLE OVERVIEW
The Executive Director will act as the chief executive officer, principal fundraiser, and advocate, responsible for providing strategic leadership and comprehensive management of the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation (DPLFF). Working closely with staff and the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director aims to enhance the Foundation's fundraising capabilities and achieve its goal of becoming one of the top 10 library foundations in the United States.
This position entails overseeing the strategic planning process, operational implementation, staff management, and serving as the chief spokesperson alongside the Board Chair, reporting primarily to the Foundation Board Chair and secondarily to the Personnel Committee.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Fundraising & Financial Oversight
- Collaborate with the Board, DPLFF staff, and the City Librarian to design and execute comprehensive fundraising strategies, including major gifts, planned giving, annual contributions, corporate sponsorships, and special events.
- Manage DPLFF's financial operations; establish, implement, and oversee the operational budget.
Advocacy Initiatives
- Work with the City Librarian, DPLFF Board, and Advocacy Committee to formulate and implement strategies that support critical library initiatives and secure necessary funding from the City.
- Build and maintain relationships with community stakeholders, City Council members, the Mayor, and elected officials to address pressing library needs.
Board Engagement
- Foster strong relationships with current and former Trustees; collaborate with the Board to create strategic and fundraising plans.
- Assist the Board in recruiting, developing, and engaging Trustees, including committee assignments.
Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion
- Develop and implement EDI strategies in collaboration with the EDI Committee, ensuring alignment with the library's objectives.
Marketing and Communication
- Oversee DPLFF's marketing and communication strategies, including brand development, advertising, digital presence, and media relations.
- Represent DPLFF to external stakeholders, including volunteers, to maintain informed and supportive relationships.
Team Leadership
- Articulate and communicate the organizational vision to staff, providing leadership, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to enhance team performance.
Innovative Leadership
- Introduce creative and innovative strategies for fundraising, advocacy, and organizational management to position DPLFF as a leader in the sector.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 10+ years of experience in the nonprofit sector, preferably within a foundation.
- 5+ years in a leadership role within a nonprofit or foundation.
- Proven track record in fundraising and fundraising management.
- Experience and knowledge in advocacy efforts.
- Successful personnel management experience.
- Familiarity with the library sector or related support organizations.
- Experience in financial management of budgets and expenses.
- Understanding of the fundraising and political landscape in Denver.
- Background with a reputable organization.
- Ability to work effectively across all levels of an organization.
- Experience and willingness to strategically partner with other organizations.
- A commitment to elevating the organization to a leadership position in its field.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
- Competitive annual salary range of $145,000 - $180,000, commensurate with experience.
