The Denver Public Library Friends Foundation is a nonprofit entity dedicated to enhancing the Denver Public Library through fundraising initiatives and advocacy efforts.

Our philanthropic contributions are vital in supporting the library's financial framework, enabling it to achieve its mission. We also engage in advocacy for public funding to enrich community services and enhance library programs.

The Foundation's primary functions include: fundraising with various stakeholders; managing memberships; conducting online and in-person sales of books and merchandise; organizing fundraising events; promoting the library within the community; advocating to public officials and the community; and overseeing the growth of our endowment.

ROLE OVERVIEW

The Executive Director acts as the chief executive, principal fundraiser, and advocate, tasked with providing strategic leadership and comprehensive management of the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation (DPLFF). Working closely with staff and the Board of Trustees, the Executive Director aims to elevate DPLFF's fundraising capabilities and realize its vision of becoming one of the top library foundations in the United States.

This position is responsible for overseeing the strategic plan, operational execution, staff management, and serves as the chief spokesperson alongside the Board Chair, reporting primarily to the Foundation Board Chair.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Fundraising & Financial Oversight

  • Collaborate with the Board, DPLFF staff, and the City Librarian to develop and implement comprehensive fundraising strategies, including major gifts, planned giving, membership drives, corporate sponsorships, special events, and book sales.
  • Manage DPLFF's financial operations, including the establishment and monitoring of the operational budget.

Advocacy Initiatives

  • Work with the City Librarian, DPLFF Board, and Advocacy Committee to formulate and execute strategies that support critical library initiatives and advocate for necessary funding from the City.
  • Foster relationships with community stakeholders, City Council, the Mayor, and elected officials to address pressing library needs and issues.

Board Engagement

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with current and former Trustees; collaborate with the Board to formulate strategic and fundraising plans.
  • Assist the Board in the recruitment, development, and engagement of Trustees, including committee assignments.

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion

  • Formulate and implement plans related to equity, diversity, and inclusion in collaboration with the EDI Committee, ensuring alignment with the library's objectives.

Marketing and Communications

  • Oversee the marketing and communications strategies of DPLFF, including brand development, advertising, digital outreach, and media relations.
  • Act as a representative of DPLFF to external stakeholders, ensuring informed and supportive relationships.

Staff Leadership

  • Communicate the organizational vision to staff, providing leadership, direction, mentoring, and professional development opportunities to enhance individual and team performance.

Thought Leadership

  • Offer innovative approaches to fundraising, advocacy, and organizational management to position DPLFF as a leader in the sector.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Over 10 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, preferably within a foundation.
  • At least 5 years in a leadership role within a nonprofit or foundation.
  • Proven experience in fundraising and fundraising management.
  • Knowledge of advocacy practices.
  • Experience in personnel management of a successful team.
  • Familiarity with the library sector or supporting organizations.
  • Experience managing budgets and financial operations.
  • Understanding of the fundraising and political landscape in Denver.
  • Experience with a reputable organization.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across all levels of the organization.
  • Desire to elevate an organization to a leadership position in its field.
