Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Purchasing Manager at Western Enterprises plays a crucial role in ensuring a seamless supply of essential components across our manufacturing and assembly facilities. This position requires daily collaboration with Sales, Engineering, and various Operations team members. The Purchasing Manager is responsible for overseeing all facets of inventory planning, cost efficiency, supplier development, and maintaining robust supplier relationships. Effective leadership and mentorship of the purchasing team are vital for success in this role.

Reporting Structure:

Reports To: Vice President of Operations

Direct Reports: 5 domestic and international buyers across all facilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Purchasing department to support operations across three sites.
  • Engage with top suppliers to guarantee timely delivery of critical materials.
  • Assist the Purchasing Team in resolving supplier-related challenges.
  • Ensure a consistent supply of materials to meet production needs.
  • Identify and assess alternative suppliers to mitigate risks associated with single sourcing.
  • Optimize purchased inventory levels in relation to revenue while strategically increasing safety stock.
  • Conduct training sessions to ensure the Purchasing Team adheres to established policies and procedures.
  • Enhance purchasing processes through continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Analyze demand trends in collaboration with the sales team to manage finished goods inventory effectively.
  • Procure adequate inventory of seasonal products based on sales forecasts.
  • Coordinate with Engineering to align new product launches with inventory management.
  • Drive cost-saving initiatives related to purchased goods.
  • Proactively seek and develop new supplier relationships while strengthening existing ones.
  • Mentor and coach team members to foster a motivated and engaged Purchasing Team.
  • Establish monthly and quarterly supplier performance metrics.
  • Maintain service agreements and contracts with suppliers.
  • Oversee outsourcing of production as necessary.
  • Lead cost reduction initiatives within the Purchasing department.

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following qualifications:

Knowledge:

  • Expertise in purchasing practices and negotiation strategies.
  • Understanding of MRP/ERP systems.
  • Proficiency in inventory management techniques.
  • Familiarity with Kanban systems and multi-level BOMs.
  • Experience in high mix/low volume environments.
  • Knowledge of ISO and MDSAP quality systems is highly desirable.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel; familiarity with MAPICS/Infor XA is a plus.

Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Purchasing, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in a similar role, preferably within a manufacturing context.
  • In-depth knowledge of MRP/ERP systems and inventory replenishment methodologies.
  • Comfortable working on manufacturing and assembly floors.
  • Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and their application in purchasing.

Certifications:

APICS CPM or CPIM certification is advantageous but not mandatory.

Physical Requirements:

Employees must be able to perform essential functions, which may include:

Extended periods of computer use, walking on manufacturing floors, lifting up to 50 lbs, and conducting annual physical inventory assessments.
