Job Overview

Position Summary:

The Purchasing Manager at Western Enterprises plays a crucial role in ensuring a consistent supply of essential components across all manufacturing and assembly facilities. This position requires daily collaboration with Sales, Engineering, and the Operations team. The Purchasing Manager is responsible for comprehensive inventory planning, process enhancement, cost efficiency, supplier development, and maintaining supplier relationships. Leadership skills are vital for mentoring and guiding the purchasing team.

Reporting Structure:

Reports To: Vice President of Operations

Direct Reports: 5 domestic and international buyers across three locations

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversee the Purchasing department to support manufacturing and assembly processes.
  • Engage with key suppliers to guarantee timely delivery of critical materials.
  • Assist the Purchasing Team in resolving supplier-related challenges.
  • Ensure a reliable supply of components to meet production needs.
  • Identify and assess alternative suppliers to minimize dependency on single sources.
  • Strategically manage purchased inventory to optimize revenue and safety stock levels.
  • Conduct training sessions to ensure adherence to purchasing policies and procedures.
  • Enhance purchasing processes through continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Analyze demand trends with the sales team to manage finished goods inventory effectively.
  • Procure adequate seasonal inventory based on sales forecasts.
  • Collaborate with Engineering to align new product launches with inventory management.
  • Drive cost reduction initiatives related to purchased goods.
  • Identify and cultivate new supplier relationships while reinforcing existing ones.
  • Mentor and develop the Purchasing Team to foster engagement and effectiveness.
  • Establish monthly and quarterly evaluations for supplier performance.
  • Manage contracts and service agreements annually.
  • Coordinate production outsourcing as necessary.
  • Lead cost-saving initiatives within the Purchasing department.

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, candidates must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:

Knowledge:

  • Purchasing methodologies and negotiation strategies
  • MRP/ERP system functionalities
  • Inventory management and safety stock calculations
  • Kanban systems and multi-level BOMs
  • ABC inventory classification and analysis
  • Experience in high mix/low volume environments
  • Familiarity with ISO and MDSAP quality standards
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel
  • Experience with MAPICS/Infor XA is a plus

Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Purchasing, Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of experience in a similar capacity, preferably within a manufacturing or assembly context.
  • In-depth understanding of MRP/ERP systems and inventory replenishment strategies.
  • Comfortable working on manufacturing and assembly floors.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and their application in purchasing.

Certifications:

APICS CPM or CPIM certification is preferred but not mandatory.

Physical Requirements:

The physical demands necessary for this role include:

Extended periods of computer use, walking through manufacturing areas, lifting up to 50 lbs, and participating in annual physical inventory assessments.

Work Environment:

This position involves working in office, manufacturing, and assembly settings.
