Position Overview:


The Purchasing Manager at Western Enterprises plays a crucial role in ensuring a consistent supply of procured components across multiple manufacturing and assembly facilities.

This position collaborates closely with Sales, Engineering, and various members of the Operations team on a daily basis.


This highly visible role is responsible for overseeing all facets of inventory planning, process enhancement, cost efficiency, supplier development, and maintaining supplier relationships.

The ability to guide and mentor team members is vital.

Supervises:
5 Direct reports including both domestic and international buyers across all facilities.
Key Responsibilities:
Include, but are not limited to:
- Managing the Purchasing department to support manufacturing and assembly operations.
- Collaborating with leading suppliers to guarantee timely delivery of essential components and materials.
- Assisting team members in resolving supplier-related issues as they arise.
- Ensuring a continuous supply of components and materials to facilitate production and assembly.
- Identifying and assessing alternative lower-cost supply sources to mitigate single and sole sourcing risks.

- Reducing overall purchased inventory as a percentage of revenue while strategically increasing safety stocks to minimize production and assembly disruptions.

- Conducting regular training sessions to ensure the Purchasing Team is well-versed in purchasing policies, stock levels, and processes.

- Streamlining purchasing procedures and implementing improvements.

- Analyzing demand history and major customer purchasing trends with the sales team to adjust finished goods inventory while preventing stockouts and excess inventory.

- Acquiring sufficient inventory of seasonal products and components based on sales demand forecasts.

- Collaborating with Engineering to synchronize new product introductions and component phase-outs to meet sales targets while minimizing obsolete inventory and launch delays.

- Continuously driving cost improvements related to purchased products and components.
- Proactively identifying and nurturing new suppliers while strengthening relationships with existing ones.
- Coaching and mentoring direct reports to cultivate a dynamic and engaged Purchasing Team.
- Developing monthly and quarterly supplier performance ratings.
- Maintaining annual contracts and service agreements.
- Coordinating the outsourcing of production when necessary.
- Leading cost reduction initiatives within the department.
Qualifications:
To excel in this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Knowledge:
- Proficient in purchasing practices and negotiation strategies.
- Familiarity with MRP/ERP system logic.
- Understanding of inventory management, including ROP and Safety Stock calculations.
- Knowledge of inventory planning and Kanban replenishment systems.
- Experience with multi-level BOMs and ABC inventory classification.
- Background in high mix/low volume business environments.
- Knowledge of ISO and MDSAP quality systems is highly preferred.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel is essential; experience with MAPICS/Infor XA is a plus.

Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Purchasing, Supply Chain, Business Administration, or a related field.
- Minimum of 8 years in a similar role, preferably within a manufacturing or assembly context.
- Extensive knowledge of MRP/ERP logic and alternative inventory replenishment systems.
- Comfortable working on manufacturing and assembly floors.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing techniques and their application in purchasing.

Certificates and Licenses:
- APICS CPM or CPIM certification is desirable but not mandatory.
