JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB SUMMARY:
Aquatic Safety Officers are certified experts dedicated to ensuring the safety of individuals in and around water environments.
Average Hours per week: 10-40
Pay Rate: $17.76 to 20.10 per hour
SUPERVISION
Supervision Received:
Employees in this role operate under the direct oversight of the Recreation Supervisor for Aquatics.
Supervision Exercised:
Employees may oversee the activities of other part-time recreation personnel and volunteers.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Supervise programs, focusing on accident prevention and the safety of users and staff.
- Monitor patrons utilizing the swimming facility.
- Enforce facility regulations regarding the swimming pool, locker rooms, and public areas.
- Perform rescues for individuals in distress; provide first aid and emergency assistance as necessary.
- Cease any hazardous activities and eliminate unsafe conditions within the facility.
- Inspect safety equipment for functionality and proper placement.
- Assess and document chlorine and pH levels of pool water during operational hours. Monitor and record water temperatures.
- Maintain facility cleanliness, including hosing decks, vacuuming pools, and cleaning floors, walls, doors, and windows as required.
- Complete necessary facility reports during shifts.
- Communicate safety concerns to the Aquatic Specialist or Recreation Coordinator.
- Immediately report significant emergencies and calls to emergency services to the Recreation Coordinator and Supervisor.
- Participate in all required training and in-service sessions provided by management while on duty.
- Deliver exceptional customer service to patrons of the swimming facility.
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
- Water safety policies, potential hazards, lifesaving techniques, and first aid procedures.
- Basic understanding of standard pool operation protocols.
- Engage courteously with colleagues and the public, promoting a positive image of the department.
- Identify hazardous situations effectively.
- Implement the facility's emergency action plan.
- React appropriately to all aspects of an emergency.
- Retain knowledge acquired through training.
- Professionally manage public behavior in the pool area.
- Follow both oral and written directives.
- Work efficiently both as part of a team and independently.
- Must possess the following:
- American Red Cross Lifeguard Training Certificate.
- A minimum of 15 hours of certified first aid training in compliance with Title 22 of State law.
- A minimum of 9 hours of CPR training, including certification in adult, child, and infant CPR, as well as the use of breathing devices and two-rescuer CPR, in compliance with Title 22 of State law.
- Possession of:
- Fingerprint clearance from the Department of Justice.
- At least 15 years of age at the time of appointment.
- The ability to follow both written and oral instructions.
