Position Overview

This role involves two (2) temporary positions for pool lifeguards. These appointments are designed to address peak operational demands, emergencies, and other situations requiring flexible staffing.

Under the supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator, the Pool Lifeguard is tasked with ensuring the safety and well-being of all pool patrons while enforcing established rules and regulations. Key responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining a secure and healthy environment around the swimming pool.
  • Quickly recognizing and effectively responding to emergencies.
  • Conducting rescue operations and providing emergency care, including CPR and First Aid as necessary.
  • Communicating pool rules and regulations to students, faculty, and patrons.
  • Cleaning and sanitizing the pool area, including decks and equipment.
  • Monitoring locker rooms and showers as required.
  • Preparing the pool for various physical education classes and activities.
  • Performing additional related duties as assigned.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Monitor pool activities to prevent accidents and identify individuals in distress.
  2. Respond to emergencies and conduct lifesaving operations, including CPR/AED and First Aid.
  3. Prepare the facility for aquatic events and activities.
  4. Provide information about pool policies and enforce safety regulations.
  5. Inspect the pool area for safety and cleanliness, performing maintenance as needed.
  6. Document incidents and maintenance issues.
  7. Set up the pool for various aquatic programs.
  8. Maintain a professional demeanor and high level of customer service.
  9. Perform other assigned duties as necessary.

Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:

All certifications must remain current throughout employment. Failure to provide proof of valid certification may lead to termination.

  • Experience: A minimum of 200 hours as a paid or volunteer lifeguard.
  • Licenses and Certifications:
    • Current Lifeguarding certification from the American Red Cross or equivalent.
    • CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification.
    • Oxygen Administration certification.
    • Title 22 – First Aid for Public Safety Personnel certification.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Prior experience as a lifeguard.
  • Ability to work effectively with a diverse student population.
  • Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
  • Ability to perform under pressure and adapt to changing situations.
