Department Overview: The Los Angeles LGBT Center's Health Services Department is among the leading providers of LGBTQ-focused primary care and associated services nationwide. Our commitment to enhancing the well-being of LGBTQ individuals is reflected in our extensive range of client-centered offerings, including primary care, mental health services, sexual health, pharmacy, case management, nutrition, clinical research, housing assistance, and food resources.

Role Summary: The Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) will support the DIS Program Manager in managing syphilis triaging for all patients, overseeing partner notification services, and verifying syphilis diagnoses and treatments. This role acts as a crucial link between public health entities and private healthcare providers, necessitating the development of cooperative relationships.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Program Manager in supervising DIS staff and consultants.
  • Ensure quality assurance and compliance for DIS staff.
  • Respond to external inquiries related to STI investigations.
  • Collaborate with the Los Angeles County Department of HIV/STI Programs and other public health investigators to assist clients diagnosed with syphilis, HIV, and other STIs.
  • Triage incoming STI reports from laboratories and healthcare providers.
  • Coordinate with clinic staff to report positive cases to public health authorities.
  • Provide client-centered counseling for individuals diagnosed with STIs.
  • Conduct interviews with priority STI clients to gather partner information and prevent further transmission.
  • Notify partners of potential exposure to STIs.
  • Conduct field investigations to locate and inform patients or partners of test results and necessary referrals.
  • Consult with healthcare professionals to obtain medical information and recommend appropriate treatment.
  • Implement enhanced surveillance activities, including administering standardized questionnaires.
  • Deliver educational presentations to staff and community partners on STI prevention.
  • Accurately document client information in relevant databases.
  • Represent the Center at meetings and participate in special events as directed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience or knowledge of LGBTQ community issues.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively.
  • Proficient computer skills and data entry capabilities.
  • Commitment to confidentiality.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to travel within California for training and assignments.
  • Familiarity with public health and STI/HIV issues preferred.
  • Experience in public health or related fields is advantageous.
  • Access to reliable transportation and valid insurance.
  • 4-6 years of education or experience in public health or related fields preferred.
  • Experience in HIV counseling and testing is a plus.
  • Bilingual abilities are preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations.
