Department Summary: The Health Services Department at the Los Angeles LGBT Center stands as one of the leading providers of LGBTQ-focused primary care and associated services nationwide. Our commitment to enhancing the health and happiness of LGBTQ individuals is reinforced by a broad spectrum of client-centered services, including primary care, mental health support, sexual health services, pharmacy, case management, nutrition, clinical research, housing assistance, and food resources. We are recognized as one of the few Federally Qualified Health Centers in the country dedicated to serving the LGBTQ population.

Role Summary: The Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) will support the DIS Program Manager in managing syphilis triaging for all patients at the Los Angeles LGBT Center. This role involves overseeing partner notification services and verifying syphilis diagnoses and treatments. The DIS will act as a crucial link between public health and private healthcare providers, fostering effective collaboration between the two sectors.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Program Manager in supervising DIS staff and consultants.
  • Ensure quality assurance and compliance among DIS staff.
  • Respond to external inquiries related to STI investigations.
  • Collaborate with the Los Angeles County Department of HIV/STI Programs and other public health investigators to support clients with syphilis, HIV, and other STIs.
  • Triage incoming STI reports from laboratories and healthcare providers.
  • Coordinate with clinic staff to report positive cases to public health authorities.
  • Provide client-centered counseling for individuals diagnosed with STIs.
  • Conduct interviews with priority STI clients to gather information on sexual partners, aiming to identify infection sources and prevent further transmission.
  • Notify partners of potential exposure to syphilis, HIV, and other communicable diseases.
  • Independently conduct field investigations to locate and notify patients or partners of test results and refer them for necessary medical evaluation and treatment.
  • Consult with healthcare professionals to obtain medical information and provide diagnostic and treatment recommendations.
  • Implement enhanced surveillance activities, including administering standardized questionnaires and conducting medical record reviews.
  • Deliver educational presentations for staff, community partners, and at-risk populations to promote STI prevention and control.
  • Accurately input client information into the Center's database and public health data systems.
  • Represent the Center at meetings and participate in special events as directed.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Experience or knowledge of the LGBTQ community and relevant issues.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse individuals.
  • Proficient computer skills and data entry capabilities.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Willingness to travel within California for training and assignments as needed.
  • Familiarity with public health, STIs, and HIV is preferred.
  • Experience in public health or a related field is advantageous.
  • Access to reliable transportation and valid insurance.
  • 4-6 years of education or experience in public health or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience in HIV counseling and testing is a plus.
  • Bilingual abilities are preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations in a multicultural environment.
