Interventional Radiology and Cardiac Cath Lab Nurse

The Interventional Radiology and Cardiac Catheterization Nurse is a highly skilled and experienced Registered Nurse (RN) dedicated to providing exceptional clinical nursing practice and managing patient care effectively.
This role reports to Cardio Pulmonary Services with a collaborative relationship to Acute Care Nursing.The nurse in this specialized area is accountable for organizing, planning, directing, coordinating, and delivering high-quality, individualized patient and family-centered care based on the Watson Model of Care for a designated patient population, while also addressing unique needs and considerations related to age and specific demographics.
This position primarily supports Cardiology and Interventional Radiology, as well as various clinical departments for conscious sedation procedures for patients classified as ASA1 and ASA2 throughout the healthcare facility, including but not limited to Peri-OP, Nursing, and Endoscopy, along with cardiac monitoring as needed.
The individual in this role is expected to fully engage in fulfilling the Mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital, demonstrating behaviors aligned with the Core Values and supporting the strategic plan and quality improvement initiatives.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Utilizes the nursing process as a systematic problem-solving model, leveraging knowledge and experience to anticipate and address patient and family needs.
- Conducts focused nursing assessments to identify critical areas for a specific patient population, recognizing subtle clinical changes and adjusting care plans accordingly.
- Prioritizes and organizes patient care, ensuring adherence to planned interventions.
The nurse demonstrates the necessary knowledge and skills to provide age-appropriate care for patients on the assigned unit, consistently applying current research and critical thinking to make informed clinical decisions.
- Engages in the Hospital's Patient Satisfaction initiatives during interactions with patients, families, and colleagues.
- Establishes and maintains therapeutic nurse-patient relationships throughout the continuum of care.

- Communicates effectively using the SBAR method during all hand-off situations.
- Documents patient care accurately, including assessments, interdisciplinary plans of care, implementation, evaluation, and adherence to the Watson Model of Care, following unit-specific and hospital documentation protocols.
- Anticipates factors affecting patient comfort and modifies physical and psychosocial interventions as needed.
Facilitates patient and family engagement in their recovery process.
- Monitors and adjusts the physical environment to enhance safety.
- Provides age-specific care in treatment, assessment, and education for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.
- Promotes interdisciplinary collaboration among nurses, physicians, and other healthcare team members to meet patients' specific care needs.
- Collects and analyzes patient data to ensure fluid and electrolyte balance, airway patency, and adequate gas exchange, intervening as necessary.
- Assists with intubation and manages ventilated patients during procedures.
- Understands the pathophysiology related to patients experiencing myocardial oxygen supply and demand imbalances, as well as arrhythmias.
- Assesses and intervenes based on patient signs and symptoms, correlating with diagnostic test results.
- Administers medications, including vasoactive and antiarrhythmic drugs, safely while understanding their indications and expected outcomes.
- Recognizes indications for procedural interventions and their impact on patient pathophysiology, including the use of pacemakers when applicable.
- Interprets diagnostic information obtained during procedures and communicates findings effectively.
- Monitors patients receiving thrombolytic agents and identifies potential complications.
- Manages patient coagulation accurately before, during, and after procedures.
- Assists with various cardiac and interventional radiology procedures.
- Demonstrates knowledge of equipment setup for procedures performed in the Cardiac Catheterization and Interventional Radiology Suite.
- Troubleshoots diagnostic equipment as necessary.
- Restores and maintains hemodynamic stability in patients experiencing shock.
- Admits and recovers patients according to established protocols.
- Removes arterial lines and/or sheaths post-procedure as per orders.
- Commits to addressing the learning needs of patients and families, utilizing appropriate resources to achieve positive outcomes.
Collaborates with nursing and clinical departments throughout the patient's stay, taking a proactive role in facilitating interdisciplinary communication.
- Reviews all patient orders and communicates any changes in patient condition to the physician and team members.
Contacts the physician promptly regarding significant changes in patient condition, collaborating professionally for necessary orders and follow-up care.
- Evaluates the effectiveness of nursing interventions and documents outcomes in the interdisciplinary plan of care.
- Demonstrates the ability to plan, supervise, instruct, and evaluate ancillary nursing personnel as needed.
- Exhibits the ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating technical proficiency with monitoring and transfusion devices, especially under pressure.
- Maintains a professional appearance in accordance with dress code and promotes proper identification standards.
- Ensures a safe and clean environment that meets regulatory standards, including Patient Safety Goals.
- Participates in the implementation of the unit-specific Quality and Performance Improvement Plan as requested.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
A. Education: Bachelor of Science in Nursing
B. Qualifications/Experience: Minimum of two (2) years of clinical nursing experience in Telemetry or Critical Care (ICU, PACU, ER) nursing, with adherence to regulatory guidelines and standards of practice. Minimum of two (2) years of Cardiac Cath Lab experience. Current California Registered Nursing license. BCLS and ACLS certification required. Certification in CRN or CCRN preferred. Managing Aggressive Behavior (MAB) training within 90 days of hire. Adult moderate sedation class required within 30 days of hire and maintained every two years.
C. Special Skills/Knowledge: Bilingual skills preferred (Spanish). Basic computer skills. Experience with Electronic Medical Records preferred.
