DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW: The Los Angeles LGBT Center's Health Services Department is among the largest providers of LGBTQ-focused primary care and associated services in the nation. Our commitment to enhancing the health and happiness of LGBTQ individuals is reflected in our extensive range of client-centered offerings, including primary care, mental health services, sexual health, pharmacy, case management, nutrition, clinical research, housing assistance, and food support. We are recognized as one of the few Federally Qualified Health Centers dedicated to serving the LGBTQ community.

ROLE SUMMARY: The Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) will support the DIS Program Manager in managing syphilis triaging for all patients at the Los Angeles LGBT Center, overseeing partner notification services, and verifying syphilis diagnoses and treatments. The DIS Supervisor will act as a liaison between public health and private healthcare providers, fostering a collaborative and effective relationship.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist the Program Manager in supervising DIS staff and consultants.
  • Ensure quality assurance and compliance among DIS staff.
  • Respond to external inquiries related to STI investigations.
  • Collaborate with the Los Angeles County Department of HIV/STI Programs and other DIS/Public Health Investigators to assist clients diagnosed with syphilis, HIV, and other STIs, and facilitate partner referrals for screening and treatment.
  • Triage incoming STI reports from laboratories and healthcare providers.
  • Coordinate with clinic staff to report positive cases to the appropriate health department.
  • Provide client-centered counseling to individuals diagnosed with HIV/STIs.
  • Conduct interviews with priority STI clients to gather partner information, aiming to identify infection sources and prevent further transmission.
  • Notify partners of potential exposure to syphilis, HIV, and other communicable diseases.
  • Conduct independent field investigations to locate and notify patients or partners regarding test results or exposure, and refer individuals for necessary medical evaluations and treatments.
  • Consult with healthcare professionals to obtain medical information and provide diagnostic and treatment recommendations.
  • Implement enhanced surveillance activities, including administering standardized questionnaires and conducting medical record reviews.
  • Deliver educational presentations for Center staff, community partners, and at-risk populations to promote STI prevention and control.
  • Accurately enter client data into the Center's database and health department systems.
  • Represent the Center at meetings and participate in special events as directed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Experience or knowledge of the LGBTQ community and relevant issues.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with diverse individuals.
  • Strong computer skills with data entry proficiency.
  • Commitment to confidentiality.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Willingness to travel within California for training and assignments as needed.
  • Familiarity with public health, STIs, and HIV is preferred.
  • Experience in public health or a related field is advantageous.
  • Access to reliable transportation and ability to maintain insurance.
  • 4-6 years of education or experience in public health or a related field is preferred.
  • Experience in HIV counseling and testing is a plus.
  • Bilingual skills are preferred.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds in a multicultural environment.
