Job Summary

The State of Montana is seeking a highly skilled Financial Specialist Lead to join our Business & Financial Services Department. This is a lead position overseeing the work of 2 positions, and is responsible for training and advising the AP accounting technicians on the state's financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines.

Key Responsibilities
  • Establish and maintain internal controls for the entire agency and conduct audits to determine compliance.
  • Correct and analyze financial payment activities and develop accounting policies and procedures to help the agency meet its internal control process.
  • Develop intricate financial reports involving a variety of funding techniques and controls.
  • Oversee the work of 2 positions and provide training and guidance to AP accounting technicians.
Requirements
  • Extensive knowledge of governmental accounting and financial reporting principles, practices, and techniques.
  • Knowledge and skills related to the application and use of Excel software, including linking, V lookups, and pivot tables.
  • Analytical and interpretive thinking skills, research, and evaluation skills.
  • Ability to analyze large accounting systems and interpret data from various reports and information maintained by the system.
  • Meet minimum qualifications:
    • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, economics, business/public administration, or similar field of study with advanced financial coursework.
    • Three years of professional accounting experience, including working with complex accounting systems.
    • Two years of experience working with subsystems or management systems that process accounting data.
