Position: Educational Resources Coordinator

The Physics & Astronomy department is in search of a qualified Educational Resources Coordinator. As a vital member of the department's Instructional Resource Team, this position supports senior faculty in large general physics lectures and active-learning courses by providing lecture demonstrations, interactive activities, videos, and specialized technical assistance. Responsibilities include coordinating, setting up, troubleshooting, and dismantling equipment; organizing and leading informational and training sessions with faculty; and utilizing advanced knowledge of theoretical physics to design, develop, maintain, and enhance lecture demonstrations. This role supports eight gateway general physics and physics major lecture and active learning courses that enroll approximately 800 to 900 undergraduates each semester. The incumbent collaborates closely with senior faculty, is an integral part of the department's Instructional Resource Group, and reports to the Instructional Resource Manager. This position includes budget discretion and responsibility for purchasing resources to create and maintain in-classroom demonstrations.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Coordination of Demonstrations and Activities (24%): Proactively informs senior faculty about useful lecture demonstrations and in-class activities for upcoming topics. Assigned specific courses by the Instructional Resource Manager and keeps updated on course topics.
  2. Maintenance of Lecture-Demonstration Collection (24%): Organizes and maintains the lecture demonstration storage area and equipment, ensuring all items are in good working order and cataloged properly.
  3. Creation and Improvement of Demonstrations (24%): Independently develops physical demonstrations that illustrate physics concepts, applying advanced theoretical knowledge and creativity.
  4. Collaboration with Instructional Resource Team (24%): Assists team members in achieving their goals by providing specialized engineering and construction services, including CAD modeling and circuit building.
  5. Additional Duties (4%): Perform other related tasks as required.

Qualifications:

Special Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently and manage priorities effectively.
  • Excellent customer service skills for effective interaction with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders.
  • Solid understanding of general physics content in the undergraduate curriculum.
  • Proficient in troubleshooting scientific equipment and using hand and power tools.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree in Physics or a closely related field, with three years of experience in training and proficiency in using and building scientific instruments.

Preferred Qualifications:

An advanced degree in physics or a related discipline, along with experience in developing instructional materials and building scientific equipment.
