The Physics & Astronomy department is looking for a dedicated Educational Resources Coordinator. As a vital member of the Department's Educational Resource Team, this position supports senior faculty in delivering large-scale general physics lectures and interactive learning courses by providing engaging demonstrations, practical activities, multimedia resources, and specialized technical assistance. Responsibilities include coordinating, setting up, troubleshooting, and dismantling equipment; organizing and leading training sessions for faculty; applying advanced theoretical physics knowledge to develop and enhance lecture demonstrations; utilizing hand and power tools, makerspace resources, and CAD software for design and construction; and producing visual documentation through photography and videography.

Key Responsibilities

Facilitates the use of lecture demonstrations and in-class activities (24%)

  • Proactively informs faculty about useful demonstrations and activities for upcoming topics.
  • Assigned specific courses by the Educational Resource Manager.
  • Stays updated on upcoming class topics.
  • Knowledgeable about existing demonstrations and activities in the Department and relevant literature.
  • Uses discretion to select the most effective demonstrations and activities based on various constraints.
  • Generates creative ideas for additional demonstrations and activities.
  • Meets regularly with faculty to plan demonstration and activity usage.
  • Presents demonstrations during faculty meetings when feasible.
  • Communicates the capabilities and safe usage of demonstration equipment.
  • Agrees with faculty on the logistics of demonstration usage.
  • Maintains awareness of equipment availability and safety requirements.
  • Seeks feedback from faculty to improve demonstration effectiveness.
  • Ensures timely setup and retrieval of demonstrations.
  • Maintains communication with the supervisor regarding plans and priorities.
  • Ensures all technology and multimedia used for demonstrations are operational.
  • Collaborates with IT and facility management to maintain equipment functionality.
  • Ensures compliance with safety standards for all demonstrations.

Manages the Lecture-Demonstration Collection (24%)

  • Maintains organization and cleanliness of the demonstration storage area.
  • Organizes demonstrations logically for ease of use by faculty.
  • Creates demonstration kits to streamline setup.
  • Ensures all equipment is in working order and tests demonstrations prior to use.
  • Identifies and resolves potential issues with equipment.
  • Maintains an up-to-date catalog of equipment and demonstration records.

Develops and Enhances Lecture-Demonstrations (24%)

  • Collaborates with faculty to design and construct new curricular demonstrations.
  • Independently creates physical demonstrations illustrating physics concepts.
  • Applies theoretical physics knowledge and creativity to develop effective demonstrations.
  • Utilizes industry contacts and published resources to enhance demonstration quality.
  • Employs hand and machine shop tools for construction of demonstration components.
  • Tests and refines demonstrations based on feedback.

Assists Team Members in Instrument Development (24%)

  • Provides specialized engineering and construction services to team members.
  • Utilizes the Machine Shop for light machining tasks.
  • Employs various materials and tools for building and modifying equipment.
  • Creates 3D models and prints as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physics or a related field.
  • Three years of experience in a research or teaching laboratory environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in using CAD software and scientific equipment.
