POSITION SUMMARY: The Chief Financial Officer oversees the Finance Department and is accountable for all accounting and financial operations within the organization. We seek a forward-thinking and adaptable leader to guide a team of eight professionals. The ideal candidate is an experienced and strategic financial expert with a background in non-profit organizations and a proven track record in establishing scalable financial policies and procedures.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Direct all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, banking, payroll, and general ledger management.
  • Develop and uphold internal controls, including policies, procedures, and systems to ensure the security of income, accurate transaction reporting, timely account payments, asset safeguarding, and compliance with audit and legal standards.
  • Manage the overall month-end closing process, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Ensure adherence to US GAAP, organizational accounting policies, and all relevant government contract regulations.
  • Maintain accurate cost allocations for correct billing of government contracts and private revenue grants.
  • Ensure monthly reconciliation of all balance sheet accounts, keeping all balances current and valid.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Team and other departments to maintain up-to-date balances.
  • Generate financial reports for the Executive Team and Finance Committee to effectively monitor the organization's financial status.
  • Create insightful and user-friendly financial reports for budget managers to facilitate effective department or project budget management.

Audits:

  • Lead the annual fiscal audit, serving as the primary contact for audit-related matters and preparation of audited financial statements.
  • Collaborate with external auditors to oversee the preparation of the organization's annual tax returns, ensuring accurate and timely submissions.
  • Manage the annual audit of the 401k Plan.
  • Oversee all government agency audits, ensuring efficient handling of audit requests within specified timelines and developing action plans to address any findings.

Cash Management:

  • Oversee the organization's cash flow, including short-term cash maintenance, operational reserve investments, and compliance with line of credit reporting requirements.

Payroll and 401k Plan:

  • Supervise the payroll function, ensuring accurate processing in compliance with organizational policies and applicable regulations.
  • Act as the 401k plan administrator in partnership with Fidelity, collaborating with the CFO to manage 401k Committee meetings and ensure compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

Budget, Forecast, and Decision Support:

  • Develop budgets for ongoing or new funding sources, including government contract RFPs and private grant applications, in collaboration with the Contracts & Compliance and Development teams.
  • Partner with the CFO to lead the annual budget and mid-year forecasting processes.
  • Provide financial analysis to support ad-hoc business decisions and new investment opportunities across the organization.

Process Improvements:

  • Guide the Finance team in identifying process enhancements and automation opportunities to support future growth. Ensure processes are documented and scalable, with appropriate cross-training for Finance team members.

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Recruit, train, and manage Finance team members, leading the team in setting annual goals and maintaining accountability.
  • Offer ongoing coaching and professional development opportunities for all Finance team members to support their career growth.

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and a current CPA.
  • 7-10 years of supervisory experience in a finance role encompassing both accounting and FP&A responsibilities, with a preference for experience in non-profit organizations and knowledge of government contracts.
  • Strong commitment to cultural competency and diversity, with a deep dedication to social justice and systemic change addressing barriers based on race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
