About this Role:

Lake Michigan Credit Union is seeking a Senior Vice President of Finance who will play a pivotal role in ensuring the financial integrity and operational effectiveness of the credit union's financial functions. This role encompasses the strategic direction, management, and oversight of the finance department, ensuring adherence to regulatory standards, and contributing to the overall financial strategy and performance of the credit union.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Oversees the formulation and execution of effective financial strategies, policies, and procedures. Ensures alignment with evolving regulations, legal standards, accounting principles, and industry trends.
  • Supervises the development and implementation of financial information and control systems, including general ledger, budgeting, mortgage accounting, and other financial subsystems.
  • Responsible for the accurate preparation, maintenance, and reporting of internal and external financial records and analyses.
  • Oversees the creation and preparation of daily, monthly, annual, and other periodic financial statements and reports. Ensures that accounts and reports provide responsibility centers with adequate operating and financial data.
  • Manages the preparation of budgets. Assists in establishing operational budgets for each responsibility center.
  • Conducts and oversees special studies for management, such as cost analyses, ratio and trend analyses, and other comparative examinations. Identifies and analyzes trends in financial data.
  • Provides guidance and support to department managers in managing financial entries and reports and various comparative analyses.
  • Collaborates with Information Systems personnel in the development and implementation of efficient financial procedures consistent with new applications.
  • Establishes and maintains effective business relations with external auditors and regulators. Acts as a liaison between the Credit Union and external auditors and regulatory authorities.
  • Stays updated on new and changing accounting statements issued by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB).
  • Effectively supervises the finance department staff, ensuring optimal performance. Provides leadership to department personnel through effective objective setting, delegation, communication, training, and performance evaluations as necessary.

  • Five to eight years of progressive financial experience, with at least 5 years in a leadership role within the financial services sector, preferably in a credit union or banking environment.
  • A bachelor's degree in accounting and/or finance, CPA or similar credential (beneficial, but not required).
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, regulatory requirements, and financial reporting standards specific to credit unions.
  • Familiarity with related auditing functions.
  • Understanding of Credit Union operations and information needs.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Excellent analytical abilities.
  • Technical understanding of automated accounting and other industry information systems.
